  2. District Parent Literacy Club ELLPResearch Parent involvement is linked to children's school readiness. Research shows that greater parent involvement in children's learning positively affects the child's school performance, including higheracademic achievement (McNeal, 1999; Scribner, Young, & Pedroza, 1999; Sui-Chu & Willms, 1996; Trusty, 1998; Yan & Lin, 2002) and greater social and emotional development (Bredekamp & Copple, 1997; Fantuzzo & McWayne, 2002). Simple interactions, such as reading to young children, may lead to greater reading knowledge and skills (Snow, Burns, & Griffin, 1998). And, children with richer home literacy environments demonstrate higher levels of reading knowledge and skills at kindergarten entry (Nord, Lennon, Liu, & Chandler, 2000)

Family, School, and Community provides Parent Education in the form of parent outreach and training activities. DESIRED RESULTS: Produce strong families by increasing parental awareness and become active participants in their children’s education in order to support academic success in all students. Family, School, and Community will collaborate in providing parents with information, resources and training. DESIRED RESULTS: Produce healthy communities by increasing family awareness in order to support academic success in all students and have parents become active participants in their child’s education. ACTIVITY A. Parent Resource Center TYPE 1-6 WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE? • Publish Parent Newsletter • Design a bulletin board • Design a Parent Website • Make sure Technology is available to use and to train parents on how to use them. • Smart Boards • Computers • Television-DVD Player • Establish a Literacy Parent Program • Lending library with books on self-improvement, textbooks, parenting, etc. • Book exchange • Book/Literacy Club
