Work History1920s into Depression Era • After High School • Job dredging a canal to earn money for college • Worked with illiterate migrant workers and was upset by the way they were portrayed in the newspapers • English major at Stanford • New York City – construction & free-lance writing • Back to California – random jobs • Fruit picker, house painter, lab assistant • All working class jobs – gained sympathy for working class people
