Andrew Buschbacher Sports Writing
Keys to Sports Writing • A sports reporter must be a student of the game • The reporter needs to understand the rules of the game and team that he/she is covering • Sports reports are not play-by-play recaps! • Watch a team then ask coaches and players questions • Refrain from being a cheering spectator at games • Have to take quick notes • Be fair and unbiased! • Support opinions with facts!
Writing the Story • Develop a clear focus • Know the difference between sports slang and sports language • Make the language average for the reader • Avoid using sports clichés • “we have to play as a team” • “It’s a rebuilding year for us”
Developing a Sports Story • Sports are about people, statistics and records • Don’t get carried away with stats • More than three numbers in a sentence or paragraph is usually too much • Choose the stats that are worth highlighting • The running back rushed for 343 yards and 4 touchdowns • Make sure its accurate!
Types of Sports Stories • Advance Story • Trend Story • Sports New Story • Game Story • Sports Feature Story
Advance Story • Coaching record • Coach Smith going for his 300th win • How to replace injured star player • You may have to have coaches and players look ahead to a game in three weeks in order to write an advance story • Be use to tell them that you have a deadline date!
Trend Story • If a team has won or lost big in last couple of weeks find out why • Include information on events coming up first and the events that happened in the past last • Future news is more interesting than old news to students • Sports trend stories are popular for high school newspapers
Sports News Story • Make sure to balance, objectivity, libel and ethics in sports writing as you would for other news writing • Follow events like NCAA eligibility, performance-enhancing drugs and sports funding • Remember sports are a business
Game Story • Things to consider: • Significance of the event • Probable lineups and/or changes in the lineup • Records of the teams and/or players during that season • Tradition and rivalries • Who is favored to win • Coaches statements • Spectacular plays • Compare teams
Sports Feature Story • Is a story that is behind or beyond the game • A coach that coaches his/her son/daughter • A athletes road to success after losing a leg or arm • Needs to be told through strong quotes, observations and details.
Feature Leads For Sports Stories • If not you are not writing a straight-news game lead you can use a variety of leads as seen in chapter three like the Vignette Lead and the Nut Graph
