Death of Jeroboam II2 Kings 14:28-29 • Jeroboam II did not turn back from idolatry • Jeroboam II died in the 15th year of Uzziah • He was the 3rd descendant of Jehu to rule in the fulfillment of God’s promise 2K 10:30 • There is about 22 years between the reign of Jeroboam and Zechariah • Zechariah was the fourth and last descendant of Jehu to sit on the throne • God put an end to the dynasty of Jehu
2 Kings 10 • 30And the LORD said unto Jehu, Because thou hast done well in executing that which is right in mine eyes, and hast done unto the house of Ahab according to all that was in mine heart, thy children of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel. 31But Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of the LORD God of Israel with all his heart: for he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam, which made Israel to sin.
Remember Amos and Hosea predicted judgment and destruction • Things looked great in the land right now • That is why the message from Amos and Hosea stand out. • What were these prophets thinking? • Everything looks good the land has expanded as in the days of Jeroboam I • This prosperity is about to end • That was the message delivered to them • 22 year gap between Jeroboam II and Zechariah 2K 14:23 and 15:1-2
Zechariah died only 6 months after his rule began this was the 4th generation from Jehu • He was slain by Shallum 2K 15:10 • Shallum reigned in his stead • He only reigned one month and was slain by Menahem 2Kings 15:13-15 • This was in the 39th year of Uzziah (2Chr 26: 1) or Azariah (2K 15:2) king of Judah same person
Uzziah’s Sin and punishment 2 Chron 26:16-21 Uzziah had been a righteous king He determined to offer incense in the temple Azariah the high priest said to him,”It is not right for you to offer incense Menahem reigned 10 years and was wicked 2Kings 15:16-18 He was a ruthless man. He even slashed the women who were pregnant and killed their unborn babies Do you remember where we heard this before? Amos 1:13 Judgment of Ammon
Judah • Uzziah already had a censer and ready to offer incense • As he began the offering, leprosy broke out in his forehead • The priest examined the place on him and hurried him out of the temple because of leprosy • Uzziah knew the Lord had smitten him • He had leprosy until he died • Jotham his son began to co-reign with him
Israel under Menahem rule • Tiglath-Pileser III invaded Israel 2K15:19 • The Assyrian king turned to the west and this included Israel • His army was so strong there was none who could stand against him • He marched to the sea and took Phoenicia • He forced them to pay tribute along with Syria, Israel and Arabia • Israel also was required to pay 1,000 talents of silver
Menahem dies 2 kings 15:22-25 • After Menahem dies his son Pekahiah began to rule • He was evil and died after 2 years • His captain Pekah conspired against him and killed him in the palace of Samaria • He proclaimed himself king after killing Pekahiah • He was very wicked and continued in idolatrous ways as all the kings before him • Pekah reigned 20 years 2Kings 15:25-31
Uzziah Dies • When Uzziah died, he was buried in a field that belonged to the kings • He was buried close to the normal place but not in a sepulcher with other kings because he was a leper • This makes 3 kings not buried in the tombs of the kings • Jehoram and Joash were not because of their wickedness
Isaiah begins to prophesy Isa 6:1-13 • In the year Uzziah died, Isaiah saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the Temple • The seraphim stood above Him • Each had 6 wings • 2 covered his face • 2 covered his feet • 2 he used to fly with • One cried to another, “Holy, holy, holy is Jehovah of hosts: the whole earth is full of His glory
Isaiah begins to prophesy Isa 6:1-13 • When this happened the foundations shook and the house was filled with smoke • Isaiah was afraid and said, ”Woe is me” • I am a man of unclean lips • I live in the midst of people of unclean lips • I have looked upon the King, Jehovah • One of the seraphim took a hot coal from the altar and touched Isaiah’s lips
Isaiah begins to prophesy Isa 6:1-13 • This was done to take away his iniquity and his sins forgiven • Isaiah heard the voice of the Lord saying • Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? • Isaiah said, “Here I am. Send me.” • The Lord accepted his offer • Here is your mission
Isaiah’s mission Isa 6: • 9And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. 10Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed. 11Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate,
Isaiah’s mission Isa 6: • Preach to this stubborn and rebellious people what they did not want to hear • Preach to them until they stop their ears and close their eyes • God always warns his people before He punished them hoping they would repent • Isaiah said how long am I to do this? • God said until the cities lie in ruins and no inhabitants, and the land utterly destroyed
We have heard Judgment preached & prepare to meet God • Now the chilling news • Israel’s rebellion and disobedience will now bring national destruction • God has had all He can take • Let us remember as we study the prophets that enter the picture during these times. They prophesied what would happen to Israel and Judah because of their iniquities – Also as we study further it all comes true just as the prophets said. (we know it was of the Lord)
