Wear Testing of Self-Lubricated Bearing Materials • Army Corps of Engineers tested ~10 PTFE based self-lubricating bearing materials under high load, low speed oscillating conditions for 120 hrs (approximately equivalent to 14 years of service life) • Testing reported depth of wear per 100 hours of testing • Project will calculate the wear coefficients of the materials using Archard’s Law
Other PTFE Wear Testing • Wear coefficients calculated from COE testing will be compared to other determined wear coefficients for similar materials • LSU testing – pin on disk testing of PTFE based composites • Gdansk University testing – planar sliding of commercial PTFE based bearing materials
Edge Loading of Bearings • Misalignment of bearings can lead to a large reduction in contact area • COE simulated misalignment in their testing • Compared test results to ABAQUS model that determines contact area
