Advent 3 The “Annunciations” Luke 1.26-38 Matt 1.18-25
The “Annunciations” Two very different Birth Stories – Matthew and Luke Matthew Luke Mary Shepherds Nazareth – Bethlehem – Jerusalem- Nazareth Joseph Magi Bethlehem – Egypt - Nazareth
The “Annunciations” Main Points: • Visitations / Dreams of Angels • Jesus is a ‘descendent’ of David • “Jesus” means “saviour” – like “Joshua” • (Matt) “from their sins” • Jesus is “Son of God” • Jesus is conceived in a virgin womb • This is an act of the Holy Spirit • (Matt) It is the fulfilment of prophecy
The “Annunciations” Meanings: • God is providing a new beginning • It is both continuous and dis-continuous with the past (Mary / Holy Spirit) • It is entirely dependent on God (virgin) • Jesus is God’s presence among us • He comes to “save” (micro / macro levels) • This is a positive, joyful thing
The “Annunciations” Other Issues: • The insignificance of Mary • The attitude of Mary • The attitude of Joseph • The analogy with the church – the virgin womb for Christ.
The “Annunciations” Questions: • What would you say today if someone claimed they had been directed by an angel or by a dream? • What is the main importance of claiming that Jesus was born of a virgin? • What analogies might you draw between Mary and the purpose of the church today?
