A Bit About Me... • Brian Kelly: • UK Web Focus – a JISC-funded post to advise HE and FE communities on Web developments • Based in UKOLN – a national focus of expertise in digital information management • Based at the University of Bath • Involved in Web since 1993, while working in Computing Service at University of Leeds • Links with IT Service & Library communities • Links with JISC's TechDis service
Assumptions • It is assumed participants are aware of following: • Web has been designed so that resources can be made accessible to people with disabilities • W3C WAI has played leading role in this • Tools (e.g. Bobby) can help stop inaccessible resources • New devices (e.g. PDAs, IDTV) are coming • SENDA legislation now requires the institutions take reasonable steps to ensure people with disabilities are not discriminated against unfairly • There are things we can do. This session seeks to address the issues of what we should do: • How do we know if e-learning resources are accessible? • What role do users and tools have to play? • Is there a universal answer?
Discussion Groups • Split up into 6 discussion groups • Each group each address about 3 questions • You should appoint a reporter who will give a brief report back • Note there is not a great deal of time so please address the issues provided: • Scepticism Defining accessibility • Usability Tools & Technology • Education Policies

3 Accessibility & Usability • Areas covered: • Characteristics of an accessible Web site • Is accessibility always a good thing? • Are we being accessible for the right reasons?
4 Tools and Technology • Areas covered: • Automated testing of an accessible site • Pros and cons of automated testing tools • Use of new formats, such as XML, CSS, …
5 Education and Involvement • Areas covered: • SENDA and 'reasonable efforts' • Involvement of people with disabilities • Understanding of disabilities • Education • Development of policies
6 Accessibility Policies • Areas covered: • Status of accessibility policies • Coverage of policies • Development of policies
