SWBAT deepen understanding of Costa’s levels of thinking by creating leveled questions to get to know classmates. 01/05/17 Answer the following question in 4-5 complete sentences: In life, why is it important to ask good questions? • Please have out: • Binder • Pen/Pencil • Time Tracker • C = Conversation Level • Level 0-1. (whisper) • H = Help • Raise your hand silently – no passes, • A = Activity • Materials Prep/Warm-up • M = Movement • Feet on floor, facing forward,– no passes, • P= Participation • Quietly getting out materials & writing warm-up

  3. Where are we going? Last Class: Today we will: Cornell Notes Refresher Use Cornell Notes to study Costa’s Levels of Thinking Create leveled questions to get to know our classmates. Scheduled interviews with classmates using Costa’s Levels of Thinking. • Used teamwork to work together and build balloon towers. • Class Expectations Refresher

  4. Cornell Notes Refresher: • Watch this video on taking Cornell Notes. • Cornell Notes Tutorial • As you watch, take Cornell Notes on taking Cornell Notes • EQ: How and why should I take Cornell Notes across all classes?

  5. Pair-Share • Talk with you partner about the notes you took during the video. • Work together to create questions in the question column or edit each other’s questions. • Create a summary of the main components of Cornell Notes together. • Be prepared to share-out if cold-called.

  6. Appointment Time: Take out a sheet of paper. Copy the times I wrote to the left and leave space between each time. Make an appointment with 4 students in class. Please try to choose one student from each of the 4 table sections. You have 5 minutes to make your appointments. Be sure that if you write a classmate’s name down at a certain time that they also write your name for that same appointment. • 3:00: Name • 6:00: Name • 9:00: Name • 12:00: Name

  8. Costa’s Levels Level 1 ― Input • Gathering Information • Book Questions – Information is either known or can be found in a book. Level 2 ― Process • Thinking about the information Level 3 ― Output • Applying the information to new situations and making judgments

  9. Costa’s Levels Level 1 — Input • Who was the 1st president of the US? • Who was the 16th president of the US? Level 2 — Process • How were Lincoln & Washington similar, and how were they different? Level 3 — Output • Who was the better president? Why did you choose him?

Level 2 — Process • Explain why the bathroom signs and people being yelled at have changed. • Compare and contrast bathroom laws in the past to bathroom laws today. Level 3 — Output • Hypothesize what this picture is trying to communicate. What side does it appear to support on the issue and why do you think that?

  12. PaIr-Share What applications do Costa’s levels of thinking have in AVID tutorials? Take 1 minute to write an answer to this question in your Cornell Notes. Now take 2 minutes to share your answer with your partner.

Leveled Questions to Get to Know Each Other • Flip your clock appointments over. • Write a level 1, level 2, and level 3 question that you could ask a classmate to get to know them better. • Ex: L.1 – What are your favorite songs? L.2 – How are your favorite songs similar? How are they different? L.3 – If you could write any song, what would it be about and how would it sound? Why? 5 mins C = 0

  14. Time for our appointments! • Find your 3:00 appointment partner. • Interview him or her using your 3 questions. Write down his or her name and answers. • Be sure to answer your partner’s interview questions. 5 minutes for each appointment

  16. Exit Slip • On your Cornell Notes, summarize Costa’s Levels of Thinking and why they are important in AVID Tutorials. Please keep your clock appointments in your binder & your warm-up with your Bell-Writes Place your Cornell Notes in the drop off box when you leave class.
