  2. they divulge their secrets There is no doubt that both of them have lead a pretty busy and exciting past year which has proven extremely fruitful

  3. Agenda • Ideas and inspiration in academic research and publishing What to do and how to do it • How to have fun and be productive • The grant process – writing, collaboration, and refinement. The relatively pain-free method. • Shepherding an idea from a single word to a (funded) 32-page OLT application (we are NOT waiting for a response to our 87p ARC Linkage grant application) • Learn about the focus of our OLT grant and research stream (it’s not just a grant or a couple of papers; discover what we’re doing and how it ‘fits together’) • How we’ve gone about putting together resources to maximise publishing opportunities • Learn the secrets of ‘pyramid publishing’ and the importance of balancing research output in terms of quality and quantity in the future of publishing in Western Universities. • An overview of “Synthetic Worlds” A book edited by X, Torsten Reiners, Y. Due for release in a couple of months. We’ll talk about the content and our perspectives on the future of virtual worlds.

  10. OLT First Try • Curtin University • Murdoch • TAMK • Technical University of Graz • University of New England • Feedback • The project is excellent in its conception, approach and outcomes. The student cohort may be small but the potential impact on skills supporting industry is enormous and a stronger application would discus this aspect further.  The use of authentic learning activities and assessment through role-play seems highly appropriate to this area. However, there are some concerns about whether the outcomes are value for money, in terms of leveraging existing resources and the return on investment with respect to the students it influences. The proposal would be strengthened by collaboration with industry and use of real software and with inclusion of a strategy for evaluating the effectiveness of the tool.  The team has a great track record, as individuals, institutions and collaborators, of delivering.

  11. nDiVE OLT Grant 2013-2014 (AUD 220,000) n-Dimensional Immersive Virtual Environment • increase authenticity through inclusion of real-life complexity • use scenarios linked into a comprehensive supply chain • include gaming mechanisms to increase student engagement

  12. ARC Linkage Grant Gamification to bridge the divide between education providers and industry using scenario-based simulation to promote skills development for safety Reiners, T., Wood, L. Gregory, S., Bastiaens, T. Rio Tinto, SKM, GS1 This project develops and trials immersive virtual environments as an innovative and authentic approach to skills training to improve occupational health and safety. We provide a nationally-available system suitable for improving workplace safety over a range of scenarios. Implementation of game-based approaches increase user engagement. The environment will be supplemented with full-training support, to allow stakeholders to design and implement engaging, stress-inducing scenarios that will develop learners’ capabilities under simulated pressure, in preparation to manage real and genuinely stressful situations.

  18. Multiple Perspectives on one Scenario
