Birthday • Frida Kahlo was born on July 6, 1907 in the house of her parents, known as La Casa Azul. • La Casa Azul means the blue house. Which it is, the house is very blue. • Frida Kahlo eventually told people she was born in 1910 so that they would remember her associated with the Mexican Revolution.
Polio • Kahlo contracted polio at age six (1913), which left her right leg thinner than the left. • Kahlo disguised this by wearing long, colorful skirts
Schooling • When Frida Kahlo went to school, she was one of the only thirty-five girls at Preparatoria. • There were two thousand students enrolled. • She started to take an interest in science studies for medicine.
Bus Accident • On September 17, 1925, Kahlo was riding in a bus when the vehicle crashed. • She suffered serious injuries in the accident, including a broken spinal column, a broken collarbone, broken ribs, a broken pelvis, eleven fractures in her right leg, a crushed and dislocated foot, and a dislocated shoulder.
Beginning of Painting • After the accident, Frida Kahlo was immobile and had to stay in bed for a few months. • During this time she took up painting. • Most of her paintings are self-portraits that portray her pain in life. • She once said "I never painted dreams. I painted my own reality."
Painting Career • Kahlo painted 143 paintings, 55 of which are self-portraits. • She frequently included a monkey. In Mexican mythology monkeys are symbols of lust, but Kahlo portrayed them as peaceful animals.

Marriage • In 1929, Frida Kahlo married the painter Diego Rivera. • She married him after she went to him for advice on her own paintings. • Their marriage blew over quick from both of them not being faithful repetitively.

Married… Again • After the couple got divorced, they later remarried each other only a few years later. • Problems from the last marriage still arouse into their second marriage.

Death • Frida Kahlo died on July 13, 1954. • Before she died, she wrote in her diary: "I hope the exit is joyful - and I hope never to return” • The official reason for her death is pulmonary embolism, but she may have overdosed on drugs.
After Frida Kahlo died, her ashes were kept inside La Casa Azul. It is now a museum dedicated to her.
Famous Days • Frida Kahlo’s work wasn’t recognized until after she died. • The movie Frida, naturaleza viva (1983) was about Frida’s life. It was a huge success. • Kahlo's work was not widely recognized until years after her death. Often she was remembered only as Diego Rivera’s wife. • Until the early 1980s, when the artistic movement in Mexico, the Neomexicanismo began she was not a famous painter. • This movement recognized the values of contemporary Mexican culture.
