Extending the EuroWordNet with Public Sector Terminology EuroTerm EDC-2214 Project Presentation and Future Applications
EuroTerm Consortium • DBLAB Databases Laboratory of Computer Engineering and Informatics Department Patras University, Greece • CentER AR Center Applied Research Tilburg University,Netherlands • DLSI Department of Software & Computing Systems Alicante University, Spain
EuroTerm Main Objectives • Access to environmental information resources that are not so widely exploited • Offer incentives to public sector companies to promote their products in a wider market • Online web-based Terminology Alignment System • Strengthen EU collaboration with public sector administrations • Increase users’ awareness of domain specific electronic lexical resources
Project Overview EuroTerm Semantic Network EDC-2214 Outline of Workplan & Methodology
Semantic Networks • Schemes that allow knowledge representation. • They involve: • Nodes representing objects or concepts. • Links or arrows representing relations between nodes.
EUROWORDNET • Relates different semantic networks. • Each network represents semantic relations between terms in a specific language.
Project Activities • Exploitation of the EuroWordNet for market and commercial purposes • Awareness campaign of new technology services provided to public administrations • Terminology Alignment System • Employ domain specific concepts in IR and MT tasks
Methodology followed • Expand model approach • Adoption of the Inter-Lingual-Index (ILI) • Language internal relations (X_POS) • Language independent module (Top-Concept Ontology) • Domain and sub-domain labels • Top-down Strategy • Incorporation of terminology into the EWN through a Terminology Alignment System (TAS)
The Expand-Model Approach • Common lexical resources • Translation of terms to other languages & matching to the ILI • Attach environmental tags • Incorporation & linking of terms through the TAS • “Environmental” domain label & “Environmental Health” sub domain • Linking to the Top-Ontology and Base Concepts • Development of synsets
Terminology Alignment System • Online web-based system enabling terminology alignment • Existing tools will still be used for WordNet maintenance (Polaris) • Federated network tool linking up local tools • Ensures monolingual WordNets independence
Future NLP Applications • Incorporation of the EuroTerm in a search engine (multilingual information retrieval tasks) • Conceptual indexing vs. keyword matching • Query expansion • Incorporation in Machine Translation Systems • Domain specific dictionary publishing • Semantic annotation
Milestones / Checkpoints of project • Terminology Alignment System available at the end of the project • Environmental terminology in different languages • Expansion of the EuroWordNet • Equip search engines with a domain specific semantic network improving retrieval performance
