Photobucket New Technology Presentation Chad MacPhee 2012
Introduction • Photobucket is a free web-based image hosting, video hosting, slideshow creation and image sharing website. • It was developed in 2003 by Alex Welsh and Darren Crystal. Fox Interactive Media purchased Photobucket in 2007 and sold it to Ontela(a Seattle mobile imaging company). • In 2010 it was named to Lead411’s Seattle’s Hottest Companies list. • In June 2011 Photobucketbecame the default sharing platform for Twitter, which is significant as more than 2.25 million images are shared on Twitter daily.
How is it Used? • Photobucket is most commonly used for personal photo storage, sharing of photos online and hosting of photos and avatars for blogs, forums and message boards like Facebook, Myspace, etc. • As a user of Photobucket you may choose to keep your albums private, allow password protected access, or open them to the public. • Photobucket does not allow sexually explicit or objectionable content and may remove content at its discretion. • Photobucket offers desktop and mobile access for iOS, Andriod and Blackberry.
What Can It Do? • Photobucket allows upload and storage of photos and videos. • It has a built in suite of tools to edit photos with special effects. These tools are very user-friendly. School age children could easily manipulate their photos using these tools. • Photobucket also has a social media component built in allowing users to find “friends” and follow them, giving updates on new photos and allowing direct links to their albums.
Educational Context • This fall I will be offering a new course through the PBL team at Bridgewater High called “Through The Lens”. • Through the exploration of digital visual media such as photography and video, students explore their vision of what it is to live in Lunenburg County. • The use of Photobucket will assist students in having fast access to all of the photos that they will be working with, as well as allowing them to post, share, edit and embed their work in final project presentations. • This will give me an opportunity to help students explore some of the available free online resources for photo and video editing.
How Might It Be Used? • Students can create edited photos with captions, stickers, and borders. • Excellent tool for digital storytelling using photos. • Great way to document projects in class and at home like Science Fair or independent projects. • Students can craft collages, and other items like custom cover photo books, calendars, mugs, T-shirts and jewelry (for a price $$$).
My Primary Concern • The single biggest issue that I have when dealing with this type of technology is cross-platform access for students at school and home. • Frequently the tools that students employ are not available at school due to being blocked. We have had some success in “unblocking” certain ones, but not all of our attempts have been successful. • I need a versatile, unblocked, free system that allows students to have access to their photographs in a variety of locations. It should provide basic photo editing and sharing abilities and function on the variety of devices students may choose to bring with them.
