Cosmic Connections 2013(Intro Overview) • Welcome (Larry Browning) • Introductions (staff & participants) • NCLB grant (Title II through BoR) • Materials • Schedule • Course Requirements • http://cosmicworkshop.wikispaces.com/home
Project Personnel • Dr. Larry Browning – Physic Dept. Larry.Browning@sdstate.edu 605-688-4548 Home: 605-692-4089 Cell: 605-691-3393 • Judy Vondruska – Physics Dept. Judy.Vondruska@sdstate.edu 605-688-5859 • Dr. Christine Larson – Math Dept. Christine.Larson@sdstate.edu 605-688-6205
Workshop Goals • To use astronomy as a means of engaging students in learning physical science and mathematical concepts. • To help students derive and understand mathematical relationships, when possible • To help students understand the power of prediction from mathematical models • To help students understand fundamental physical science principles
Strategy • Use active engagement techniques (5 E’s) • Incorporate Cross Cutting Concepts and Standard Mathematical Practices in lesson development
Crosscutting Concepts(poster) 1. Patterns 2. Cause and effect: Mechanism and explanation 3. Scale, proportion, and quantity 4. Systems and system models 5. Energy and matter: Flows, cycles, and conservation 6. Structure and function 7. Stability and change
Standards for Mathematical Practice(poster) • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. • Reason abstractly and quantitatively. • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. • Model with mathematics. • Use appropriate tools strategically. • Attend to precision. • Look for and make use of structure. • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. http://www.corestandards.org/
Assessments • Group lesson plan development based on the 5E’s, Cross-Cutting Concepts and Standards of Mathematical Practice • will discuss further this afternoon • make sure to have watched the video on the 5E’s.
