BPS-STATISTICS INDONESIA • POSITION: BPS-Statistics Indonesia is a Government Institution responsible directly to the President of the Republic of Indonesia. • FUNCTION: to provide official statistics for all. Headquarter Office in Jakarta • BPS-Statistics Indonesia has representative offices in 33 Provinces, 497 districts/municipalities involving 16,111 employees. BPS District Office in Bukit Tinggi

Brief History of the Institute of Statistics The Academy of Statistics was founded under the Prime Minister Decree No.377/PM/1958 and supervised by the United Nations The Institute of Statistics was founded under the Presidential Decree No.163/1998 Undergraduate Program (four years) according to the Ministry of Education Decree Number 295/D/T/97

EDUCATION PROGRAMS • Undergraduate Program (Four Years) • STIS has three major programs: • Social and Demographic Statistics • Economics Statistics • Computational Statistics • The curriculum include applied statisticsinvolving various Subject Matters as guest lecturers. • All of students receive scholarship • STIS produces approx. 300 statistician every year that will automatically become BPS employees. • Most of graduates are assigned to become technical staff and deployed mostly in the regional offices.

  8. LECTURERS • The lecturers at the Institute of Statistics graduated from university from both local and overseas universities. • They hold master degree (56 lecturers) and doctoral degree (16 lecturers) from various subjects. • Most of them are alumni of the Institute of Statistics.

ACHIEVEMENTS IN STATISTICS AREA • First Champion in the National Statistical Contest at IPB Bogor, 2009. • First Champion of National Essay Writing in the Statistical Contest at IPB Bogor, 2009. • General Champion and First Champion in National Statistical Contest at IPB Bogor, 2008. • Creating Software “Zaitun Time Series” in 2009 and appreciation from Ministry of Communication and Information.

ACHIEVEMENTS IN OTHER AREAS • General Champion in National Spiritual Chorus at STPDN Bandung in 2008. • The most favorite booth at the Service Higher Education Institution Exposition for three consecutive years (2007 to 2009). • First Champion in National Bridge Championship in Pekanbaru, Riau, 2009. • Fifth rank of National Woman Chess Championship in groups for students, Jakarta 2009. • Third Champion in National Pairs Bridge Contest in Gorontalo, 2009

Students from the Republic of Timor Leste • Based on the MoU between the BPS and the Republic of Timor Leste, concerning the Cooperation on Statistical Education for Developing Human Resources, the Institute of Statistics (STIS) carried out a selection for85 candidates from the Republic of Timor Leste in Dili. • Ten best candidates were selected to study in STIS • Free admission fee; • Free tuition and university fee, such as library, statistics and computer laboratory, etc.; • Mentoring program to assist the selected candidates upon their arrival, including airport reception, orientation, and placement testing, to find suitable place of stay for each student;

Kinds of training: Training on Leadership Training on Statistics Training on Computer In-country training with JICA Regional Course sponsored by UN-SIAP Education and Training Center (ETC) Facilities: class rooms, dormitory, computer laboratories, auditorium, cafeteria, sport facilities

STATISTICS TRAINING KINDS OF TRAINING: Functional statisticians (26 days, 208 hours)  BPS staff (HQ and regional offices), other government institutions Distance learning for basic statistics (6 months) INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TRAINING KINDS OF TRAINING: Functional training (26 days, 208 hours) Technical training: web data base with Java, Web Master, Networking, Client Server with Visual Basic, Integrated data base application, etc. (7-20 days)

ISSUES & CHALLANGES • Specific course content needs prerequisite knowledge and computer skills → not all participants have it → decreasing available time for the main topic. • Little has been done to investigate whether the participants apply the knowledge from the training when they go back to their countries. • Gaps between training demands and supply: The training is usually organized from the supply side without knowing the demand →need to pay attention on the demand side so the training will be more useful →the participant can apply statistics for policy analysis in their countries. • There is a need for improving the different types of training to handle current issues. • The challenge of introducing cost-effective methodology in the training → e-learning and distance learning. • Budget constraints → The need for sustainable collaboration withinternational institutions for supporting the trainings.
