  3. Refresher Training • By the end of this refresher training you will be able to: • Organize and teach GI-BMP classes in 2012 • Describe the 2011 program updates

  4. Maintaining Instructor Certification • Follow the prescribed content • Keep current with all GI-BMP materials • Use only the most current versions of all materials • Follow the length of time allotted for each module • Teach at least one class per year • Complete refreshers and follow updates

  5. Urban Green Spaces • Vital to protect our water quality • Reduce soil erosion runoff and leaching • Reduce dust • Dissipate heat • Abate noise • Reduce glare • Recreational, aesthetic and psychological benefits

  6. GI-BMP Certificate of Training • Register with the County or Municipality [if applicable] • Obtain the Limited Certification for Urban Landscape Commercial Fertilizer • Submit a copy and keep the original • It belongs to the individual • Does not require renewal

Limited Certification for Urban Landscape Commercial Fertilizer • New law • All commercial fertilizer applicators, by January 1, 2014 • GI-BMP training certificate, or its approved equivalent • FDACS application form; and $25 fee • Holders exempt from further local testing • Not required for private or institutional applicators • Institutional applicators may be required to obtain GI-BMP training per local ordinance

Limited Certification for Urban Landscape Commercial Fertilizer • Provides authority to apply only fertilizers in urban landscapes for commercial gain • Does not authorize: • Application of pesticides to turf or ornamental plants, including pesticide-fertilizer mixes [i.e. weed and feed] • Operation of pest control business • Application of pesticides or fertilizers by unlicensed or uncertified individuals under the supervision of a certified person

Class Fee • Instructors are volunteers • Modest reimbursement for training expenses is permitted [$15-$30] – classroom rental, copies, other materials, etc. • If charging more than $30, you need to submit a justification to central office • FDEP does not permit any type of compensation for instructors, except as part of normal duties of employment

Registering Classes • Register all classes 30 days in advance • Complete an electronic form online [Educator Secure Login] • Only certified instructors can register classes • Classes not officially registered >> no training certificates • Short-notice to take advantage of inclement weather [Coordinator or your RC] 17 17 17 17

  19. 30 Day Registration Waiver • If a class is outside the 30 day registration period • Complete form [Appendix 24] • Requests will be based on: • Weather idling the workforce • Unexpected or uncontrollable event • Approved by the Statewide Coordinator and the Regional Coordinators

  23. New Test Scanable Forms • Request test in advance [estimate number] • Allow extra time for instructions and bubbling –in • Use new instruction presentation as aid • Destroy unused tests

Pre-Training Recommendations • Scantron – instructors must insure that DOB is bubbled in. • Make copies of TR in white/light colors • Lead instructor must strive to post trainings before 30 days • Avoid last minute delays in ordering manuals, test, etc. • Use latest training record; insure it is filled out completely. • What to do if they run out of scantron exams? • What to do if they do not receive the exams in time?
