Learning to Draw • Learn how to see • Process visual information in a special way used by artist • Learn skills to break free from stereotypic expression • Majority of adults do not progress in art skills beyond the level of development they reached at age nine or ten.
Pre-instruction drawings: A record of your art skills • Look at your warmups from the First week in September. • A Self-Portrait, drawn from memory • A tree • Hand (7th/8th grade) or shoe (6th grade)
Why did we do that? • Drawing from memory brings forth memorized set of symbols, practiced over and over during childhood. • Children learn to draw by repetition of symbols • Left untrained adults will continue to produce “childish” drawings right into adulthood.
Your Brain: The Right and Left L –mode R -mode
Your Brain: The Right and Left • The Left hemisphere controls the right side of the body • The Right hemisphere controls the left side of the body Right Left
Drawing the Vase/Face • “How do you solve the problem?” • If you are right handed copy the profile on the left side of the paper, facing toward the center • Next, draw horizontal lines at the top and bottom of the vase • Now, trace over the profile on your “vase/face” pattern, naming the parts as you go
Drawing the Vase/Face • Then go to the other side and draw the missing profile • Observe: When you get to the forehead or nose you may experience some confusion
Upside-down drawing: Making the shift Section 2
Reduce Conflict in Brain Modes • Time: 30 minutes uninterrupted • Shift into R-mode by drawing upside-down • Do not turn drawing right side up • Line to adjacent line • Don’t talk to yourself or anyone • If it feels like a puzzle: R-mode
Getting to Know R-mode • Were you unaware of the passing of time? • Did you notice anyone or hear anything? • Did you feel relaxed and confident as you drew? End
