Click on the instruments to learn more about each of them. Strings The violin is the smallest of the string family in the orchestra. It has four strings and the highest pitch out of this instrument family. This instrument reads in treble clef.( ) The string bass has the lowest pitch and is the largest of all the string instruments in the orchestra. The player of this instrument must stand in order ot play it! The string bass also plays music in bass clef. Violin Viola Cello The viola is slightly higher in pitch and larger than the violin. It also has four strings. However, unlike the violin, the viola plays in alto clef. ( ) String Bass The cello is much lower in pitch and larger in size than the viola. This instrument is played by placing the bottom on the ground and laying towards the player. The cello plays in bass clef. ( ) Click here to listen to an example of each instrument.
