2. Dear AP Gov, It’s Monday. I love you all, but we SERIOUS work to do. I realized there are some Frightening Misconceptions I am sorry, I thought you already knew this information. It’s not your fault, but it is now you responsibility to UNDERSAND what I am about to tell you….

3. A Direct Democracy is a FORM of government. • A Representative Democracy is a FORM of government. • A FORM of government means how it’s structured and how it operates. • This is NOT the same as a PHILOSOPHY of government.

4. A Direct Democracy = A form of government where the people rule directly. They make decisions without having to delegate authority. Make Legislative decisions. Individuals make policy decisions. • How does this work? We would all literally show up to the Forum and vote on issues.

5. A Representative Democracy is form of government where the people elect representatives to make decisions for them. • An EXAMPLE of this FORM of government is our current American Democracy. • Representative Democracy has nothing to do with Checks and Balances. • Checks and Balances is a philosophy how a government should operate, we happen to use it.

6. Republicans have nothing to do with the word “Republic” and Democrats have nothing to do with “direct democracy” • Republicans and Democrats have different philosophies/ideas on how to best operate our current government. • How each political party feels about the “people” is your opinion, NOT a form of government, or a philosophy of government. ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS?

Political Parties are literally a group of people who share the same ideology about the government (within degrees). • We have a two-party government, they have been called the Republicans and Democrats since the Civil War. • Before that, there were many different names/ideas but had the same general concepts as our current Dems and Republicans.

9. Tuesday – Misconceptions! • Federalism Increases political activity because of “access points” to government. • N & P Clause Gives Fed more power over the States. • Referendum…People directly Vote on Legislative Issues…it is A FORM OF DIRECT DEMOCRACY. Happens at the local level most often.

10. Federalism = Power Shared Between the State, Local, and Federal Government. • Federalists and Anti-Federalists were political parties when we first became a county. They disagreed over the power of fed v. the States. • The Anti-Federalist were called the Democratic-Republicans lead by Thomas Jefferson. • Both the Federalists and Anti-Federalists believed power should be shared, the question is how much, how, where, and why it should be shared.
