  3. Polska Facts • 3 million Jews lived in Poland before WWII. 90% were killed by the Nazis during the war. • Before WWII much ethnic diversity. After war Yalta Conference ceded some eastern lands to Russia. Most Germans left and the land was resettled by Poles. • Today 98% of population, native Poles. Major cities: • Warsaw—largest city and capital • Krakow—cultural and industrial center • Katowice—mining and industrial center

  4. Located in southern Poland • Founded in 1276 at intersection of European trading routes. Industrial city facts: • 1707 built the 1st charcoal iron blast furnace. • 1796 modern steel mill opened. Famous for artistic castings and armament. • 19th century Gliwice had 14 distilleries, 2 breweries, 5 mills, 7 brick factories, 3 sawmills, 8 chalk factories, 2 glass works, a shingle factory. • After WWI many ethnic clashes called Silesian uprisings. Which country could claim Gliwice? People of Gliwice voted to become part of Germany. • During WWII city focused on military projects from three work camps of prisoners. Gliwice became part of Poland in 1946. • Automobile factory (Opel Polska) Educational City • Silesian U of Technology second largest in Poland • Polish Academy of Sciences • Many research institutes

Religions in Gliwice Religion: • 95% of Poles are Roman Catholic , 75% are practicing • During Communist period: government tried to limit Catholic church power • By Limited religious freedom and imprisoned priests • First Polish Pope of the Catholic Church was John Paul II, from Krakow • Poland has 50 non-Catholic churches and other religious groups • 5% of Poles are Eastern Orthodox, Protestant, and other religions

  8. A Little Background of Roman Catholic Parish Registers Polish parishes began recording births, marriages, and deaths about 1600. Baptism records were required for couples to marry in the Church by the Council of Trent. 1614 the Church mandated that all baptisms, marriages, and deaths be recorded. Many Polish registers were taken to Germany during World War II. Records were kept in Latin until Poland was divided, then they were kept in Polish, Russian, and German. Other Church Records that are available at the Polish State Archives in Warsaw include: Greek Catholic, Russian Orthodox, Lutheran, Protestant, Mennonite, and Jewish . .

  11. All Saints Parish Church Background History • 1st mentioned in records of 1279 • Includes cities of Gliwice, Trynek, Ligota Villiages of Wojtowa and Ostropa • 1st building built of wood. Interior, roof and tower were victim of fire several times. This changed the appearance many times. • Body of church has remained basically unchanged. • Church was built in a Gothic style • Bricks were used later to build exterior with stone for architectural details. • The décor of the temple (Chapel) is baroque. • This church is on the list of the most valuable antiques of cities.
