Some of these open source PHP frameworks are supported by active communities and being updated at regular intervals.   1. Is Kohana dead?

  2.  At present, web developers have option to choose from a wide range of web frameworks for PHP. Some of these open source PHP frameworks are supported by active communities and being updated at regular intervals.  At the same time, there are a number of PHP frameworks that lack prompt support and frequent updates.  Kohana is one of the web frameworks that are not being updated regularly. The last stable version of Kohana – 3.3.6 – was released on 25 th July. 2016.

  3.  The official website still allows programmers to download Kohana 3.3.6. But Kohana 3.3.6 seems obsolete as it does not support PHP 7.x. Also, the website describes Kohana as a ?deprecated PHP framework?.  Kohana was officially declared deprecated on 1 st  July 2017. The developers have already revealed their plan to take the official website offline in near future.

  4.  According to the official announcement, ?After years of Kohana being largely left alone and having no active development, it is time to call a close to this framework and organization.  Jeremy and I have agreed that 6 months is a reasonable amount of time to call for a real and final end to Kohana as an organization.?  However, the PHP developers can still fork the open source code repository of Kohana hosted on Github. The official website even recommends PHP programmers to use Koseven as an alternative to Kohana.

  5.  There are still a large number of websites which are developed with Kohana.  The website owners have already started moving their applications to modern and mature PHP frameworks.  Before its retirement, many PHP programmers preferred Kohana to other PHP frameworks due to its optimal performance.  The developers now have to use Koseven – as a Kohana fork. In addition to supporting PHP 7, Koseven is fully compatible with Kohana.

  6.  The developers can move web applications developed with Kohana 3.3.x to Koseven through a simple and straightforward migration process.  Like Kohana, Koseven is also supports hierarchical model-view-controller (HHMV) architectural pattern. But Koseven, unlike Kohana, supports PHP 7.x.  It even provides a number of additional and robust features than Kohana. Hence, the PHP programmers must understand the major differences between Kohana and Koseven before migrating existing applications.

  7.  At the same time, they need to adopt and implement a number of changes to keep the functionality, performance, and usability of web applications intact after migrating from Kohana to Koseven.  For instance, Koseven does not support MySQL driver and makes encryption work as a module.  Likewise, it requires programmers to make the functions receive just $e as parameter instead of Exception $e. Hence, the PHP programmers have to make changes to the source code of existing applications before migrating them from Kohana to Koseven.
