Acid Base NPN 215
Acid-Base Disturbances • Normal blood pH: 7.35-7.45 • Acid-base balance is the homeostasis of the hydrogen ion concentration in the body fluids • Mechanisms that maintain acid-base balance are blood buffers, respiratory control of carbon dioxide (CO2), and renal regulation of bicarbonate (HCO3) • If acid-base imbalance exists, there is an imbalance in the functioning of the lungs, kidneys, or both • 4 major acid-base imbalances are: • Respiratory acidosis • Respiratory alkalosis • Metabolic acidosis • Metabolic alkolosis
Normal Blood Gas Values • pH – 7.35 - 7.45 • PCO2 - 35 – 45 mmHg • HCO3 – 22 – 26meq/liter • PO2 – 90 mmHg • O2 Saturation 94-97% • BE – base excess
