What is Africana Studies? • Study of Africans & people of African descent in Africa, the Caribbean, North & South America, & Europe • Interdisciplinary approach that allows students to explore different methodologies & disciplines • Teaches students to think analytically and critically • Helps students to make connections among global, national, and local contexts • Exposes students to the social, historical, and political contexts of the Black experience across space and time • Prepares students to function effectively in a multicultural society & diverse international environments

Africana Minor: 5 Courses • One required course: AFRI 2000 (Introduction to Africana Studies) • Plus 4 elective courses from University Curriculum • Art, Music, History, English Literature, French, Italian • Environmental Design, Geography • Anthropology, Linguistics, Political Science, Sociology, Social Work • Human Science, Geography • Some faculty waive prerequisites for Africana Studies minors

Most Americans Don’t Know • The African continent is bigger than the USA, UK, Japan, China, India & the European countries combined • The African Union, the United Nations or both recognize 55 African states • Africa contains six language families • 1.1 billion African people speak an estimated 1500-2000 languages • Four of the ten economies to grow the fastest in 2014 are in Africa
