Real-life discipleship OK I'm packed. But where are we going?
In Mark's Gospel… ‘Salvation’ ‘Saviour’ ‘Saved’ = ‘healed’, ‘rescued’ (primarily physical rather than spiritual) Sins forgiven Believe/faith/trust Follow Jesus
Disciple = ‘follow’ • As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.” And immediately they left their nets and followed him. • (Mk 1:16-18)
Disciple = ‘follow’ • As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him. • (Mark 1:19-20)
Disciple = ‘follow’ As he was walking along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed him. (Mark 2:14)
Disciple = ‘on the way’ • On the way Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” (Mark 8:27) • When Jesus was in the house he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the way?”(Mark 9:33)
Disciple = ‘on the way’ • As he was setting out on the way, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” (Mark 10:17) • They were on the way, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them. (Mark 10:32)
Disciple = ‘pick up your cross’ He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it.” (Mark 8:34-35)
In Mark's Gospel… • Disciple = ‘follow’ Jesus • Disciple = go with Jesus ‘on the way’ • Disciple = ‘pick up your cross’ like Jesus
In Mark's Gospel… “For Mark, faith and discipleship have no meaning apart from following the suffering Son of God.” James R. Edwards, The Gospel According to Mark, p. 17
They were on the way, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them; they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. He took the twelve aside again and began to tell them what was to happen to him, saying, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death … and after three days he will rise again.” (Mk 10:32-34)
#1 Then Jesus began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering … and be killed… (8:31) Peter… began to rebuke him… “Get behind me, Satan!” (8:32) Jesus said to them, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” (8:34) #2 Jesus was teaching his disciples, saying to them, “The Son of Man is to be betrayed into human hands…” (9:31) They were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another who was the greatest. (9:34) Jesus said to them, “Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all.” (9:35) #3 “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes…” (10:33-34) ? ? ?
Study When he was alone, those who were around him along with the twelve asked him about the parables… And he said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? Then how will you understand all the parables?” (Mk 4:10, 13) Disciple Fail
Worship They woke Jesus up and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”… He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they … said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” (Mk 4:38-41) Disciple Fail
Giving Jesus answered them, “You give them something to eat.” They said to him, “Are we to go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread, and give it to them to eat?” (Mk 6:37) Disciple Fail
Keeping pace with God Jesus came towards them early in the morning, walking on the sea… They thought it was a ghost and cried out; for they all saw him and were terrified… but their hearts were hardened. (Mk 6:47-52) Disciple Fail
Prayer & Fasting When Jesus had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” He said to them, “This kind can come out only through prayer [and fasting].” (Mk 9:28-29) Disciple Fail
Submission When Jesus was in the house he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the way?” But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another who was the greatest. (Mk 9:33-34) Disciple Fail
Simplicity People were bringing little children to Jesus in order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the little children come to me… for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs.” (Mk 10:13-14) Disciple Fail
Jesus said to them… “Do you still not perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened? Do you have eyes, and fail to see?Do you have ears, and fail to hear? …” Then he said to them, “Do you not yet understand?” (Mk 8:17-21)
They came to Bethsaida. Some people brought a blind man to Jesus and begged him to touch him. He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village; and when he had put saliva on his eyes and laid his hands on him, he asked him, “Can you see anything?” And the man looked up and said, “I can see people, but they look like trees, walking.” Then Jesus laid his hands on his eyes again; and he looked intently and his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. (Mk 8:22-25)

“See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death; then they will hand him over to the Gentiles; they will mock him, and spit upon him, and flog him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise again.” (Mk 10:33-34) James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you… Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” (Mk 10:35-37)
“Whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.” (Mk 10:44-45)

“Jesus has death on his mind; the disciples, their own glory.” Robert M. Fowler, “Figuring Mark’s Reader,” p. 78
They came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me”… Then Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man said to him, “My teacher, let me see again.”
Jesus said to him, “Go; your faith has saved you.” Immediately Bartimaeusregained his sightand followed Jesus on the way. (Mk 10:46-52)

“The goal of the journey is for all — disciples and implied readers [us!] — to ‘see’ as Bartimaeus does and to follow ‘on the way.’” Elizabeth Struthers Malbon, “How Does the Story Mean?,” p. 41
Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray Jesus to them. When they heard it, they were greatly pleased, and promised to give him money. So he began to look for an opportunity to betray him. (Mk 14:10-11) Disciple Fail
They went to a place called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray”… He came and found them sleeping… And once more he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy… He came a third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Enough!” (Mk 14:32-42) Disciple Fail
One of the servant-girls… stared at Peter and said, “You also were with Jesus…” But he denied it, saying, “I do not know or understand what you are talking about.” …And the servant-girl … began again to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them.” But again he denied it. Then … the bystanders again said to Peter, “Certainly you are one of them…” But he began to curse, and he swore an oath, “I do not know this man you are talking about.” (Mk 14:66-72) Disciple Fail
When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him… As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed.
But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here… But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.” So… they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples?
But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here… But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.” Total Disciple Fail? So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.(Mk 16:1, 5-8)
