Bamboo Weavers: Learning the 3R’s • The trainings covered thirty illiterate adivasi women who were learning to weave bamboo mats. Says Meenakshi, a tribal displaying her knowledge of letters, “I want to learn more, I want to read story books, I want to learn to keep accounts and be the treasurer of My SHG group. I am now able to count change • when I get money back from shops. I count the balance carefully, once, • twice. Nobody can cheat me now”.
Aksharadanam • ‘Each one teach one’ • Started in 2005 • A three month intensive literacy programme that has transformed illiterates to neo-literates • Each of the beneficiaries of the various training projects takes upon themselves the mission to teach at least one illiterate person The paper bag making and literacy classes were held from 6 to 8 in the evening on weekdays and from 12 to 4 on Sundays. Subash, a male sex worker was initiated into the trade at a young age. Now he hawks papers for a living, but was unable to read out the headlines to interest buyers.He had approached many organizations to teach him to read and write, but was turned away . He approached Madhu, the JSS staff programme coordinator running the course, and asked for permission to join the class. He was the brightest pupil, and now reads the headlines with confidence on his paper route. He also serves as a salesman in a grocery shop.
Multi-media and Haptics enhanced Vocational Education • Developed by Amrita Viswa Vidyapeetham • Pilot trainings on plumbing and fabric painting courses • Organized by JSS Idukki in the tribal settlement of Kummatankuzhi Kudi, Idukki. • The existing JSS curriculums were converted into e-learning material • graphic animation, • video lectures, • interactive workbooks and study materials.
Multi-media and Haptics enhanced Vocational Education • Visual, auditory and tactile learning styles were adapted to suit a learner with minimum or no formal education • The software ensures standarized high quality training and reduces dependence on the R.P. • There is less wastage of raw materials, because initial classes are via interactive computer lessons.
