ORIGINS OF THE eTAMPERE PROGRAMME • Assignment from the business development center in the spring of 2000 • What are the central themes of the future of information and communication technology? • Preliminary idea for an extensive development programme • A group of experts develop the idea further • Proposal for the eTampere programme was presented in August 2000, after which more specific planning has been carried out
eTAMPERE - BASED ON THE eEUROPE INITIATIVE • Objectives of eEurope • To connect each citizen, home, school, enterprise and administrative body to a network environment • To create a Europe with digital skills and entrepreneurship • To ensure that everyone has the opportunity to be part of the information society

Technology engine programmes 1. Adaptive software components - development of independent software components that function together flexibly, regardless of the devices utilized 2. User interfaces - development of ways to use every-day devices that are natural to as wide a group of users as possible 3. Perception of information - the purpose of this research is to understand how humans perceive their environment and adopt information 4. Neoreality - research is particularly directed to the development of an intelligent daily environment for humans – intelligent spaces and intelligent items 5. Broadband data transfer - the objective is data transfer that is significantly more efficient than today

eAccelerator(Tampere Technology Centre Ltd) • Shoots companies with unique high-technology-based ideas into the international growth path • The growth of companies to international success is accelerated in stages in a planned way • The required expertise and suitable opportunities for finance are sought for in each stage of development
Results and future plans of eAccelerator • Network of venture capitalists • ”From idea to international success” –concept • 5 new eA-companies on the way into international success • experts for each 5 eA-companies (business plans, internal prosesses, partners) • 5,3 M€ venture capital so far • New search for spinn-offs focused on ”traditional” industry • eFORUM – digital forum for venture capitalists • 5-6 new start-ups • General Enterprise Service Platform to create and develop the processes of eA-companies • ACQEN – Developing the quality system for e-services of SMEs • 3 M€ for eA-Companies this year
Information Society Institute, ISI(University of Tampere) • Mission is to promote the construction of an information society based on active citizenship through multidisciplinary research and development activity and through education and training. • The research is based on a variety of approaches and is directed so that it supports as well as possible the building of daily practices in the information society. Examples of fields of research: • User-Oriented Research, Media&Audiovisual Culture, IT & Everyday Life, IT & Global Development, ICT in Welfare Services, • IS Observatory, Future Technologies, e-Learning, e-Goverment, Semantic Web, New Forms of Work
Infocity(City of Tampere) Makes Tampere a model city of information society • by developing practical online services for citizens and • by improving the citizens’ preparedness to use them • by giving more possibilities to acces Internet
Results and future plans of Infocity • Electronic identification within online services • eTampere-smart card • Joint marketing of computer and Internet-courses, San´ny –email-service, Comparison service of Internet-providers • NettiNysse – Internet Bus and over 100 public access points (Best eGov´t Practise Award –2001) • Integration of on-line services into service production • Service chains
Results: 1½ years of eTampere • Programme goes as planned • Sustainable concept for developing information society: Citizens IS, developing of knowledge-intensive jobs, networking, four dimensions of IS • Internationally and nationally well-known • Internet used by 72 per cent of Tampere residents • Educational Network for motivation, know-how and availability of citizens • W3C-national office to be located in Tampere • eGlobal-conference (UN ICT Task Force, eEurope and eTampere) • 7 international projects accepted • Over 150 researchers and over 50 companies within eTampere-projects • Cooperative initiatives in subprogrammes launched to a total value of more than 24 million euros • All subprogrammes have achieved the quantitative objectives besides eAccelerator
