Write From the Beginning Program Explicit and systematic Lessons I DO, WE DO, YOU DO Expectations by the end of 1st grade: *Stay on topic *Write 6-8 complete sentences using a main idea, supporting details, conjunctions and transitions *Spell correctly, use inventive spelling for complex spelling pattern. *Use correct grammar, writing is coherent and organized *Use expanded vocabulary pertaining to topic *Content has detail . *Use correct capitals, end marks, commas, quotations, spacing *Use the Writing Process independently *Apply Thinking Map to organize writing independently

  11. Writing Expectation NowWriting is a process where there are milestones along the way that we expect students to master. (See journal) • Brainstorm 3 ideas • Organize using Thinking Map • Write 3 complete sentences using 1. Uppercase at the beginning of a sentence. 2. End mark 3. Inventive spelling ok for now. 4. Simple sentences to Complex sentences :Use “and” and “because” 5. Include details My dog barks. My Chihuahua, Sparky, always barks at strangers.

  12. Math My Math: MacGraw Hill Common Core: Explain how you solved the problem. Find other ways to solve it. Show work! • Problem solving: Show how you got the anwer. • Conceptual understanding and develop critical thinking skills: real life application (see journal) • Math skills: + and – facts, time/money, geometry, algebra, measurement, number sense, word problems, ordinal numbers, place value, graphing • Time Tests (October): addition 0-10, subtraction to 20 • Practice with flashcards

  13. Differentiation Small Group Instruction based on student needs *Gifted cluster/High achieving 1. Academic Rigor Educational expectations that are academically challenging. 2. DOK (see folder) It is a group of questions at different levels of cognitive ability, or depth of knowledge, required to complete the task. 3. Depth and Complexity/Prompts (See folder) These are visual prompts designed to help students go beyond surface level understanding of a concept and enhance their ability to think critically. The icons prompt and guide student thinking. *Frames *Discussion

Homework All of the following can be found on website. • Homework M-Th/ 20 min. and Reading is an additional 20 minutes • HW consisits of Math and Language Arts or Science Poem of the Week (Speaking grade) Spelling Words Writer’s Wednessday Book-It Reading Log starts October • Homework is checked for completion and will not be returned unless it is incomplete or incorrect. • Newsletter: Monday • Book Reports: Winter and Spring Break • Buddy Visit: Journal (1 week per student) see schedule • Student of the Week: Design and cut out traced silhouette given to student on Friday, return Monday. Homework club is 30 minutes: 2:15-2:45, Tuesdays 1:15-1:45

Assessments Tests are announced on homework cover sheet and on class website. • Benchmark Advance: Unit tests every 3 weeks on comprehension , reading fluency, phonics • Math: 10 unit tests Addition & Subtraction Time Tests(2 min. 20 math facts) pass or retest • Dibels: 3 quarterly tests: phonics, word segmentation, word reading, comprehension, fluency • Writing assessments: every 3 weeks • Science Tests: 1 quiz and 1 test for each unit

Grading Policy • 4- Demonstrates mastery above grade level standards • 3- On grade level, standards met/mastered • 2- Below grade level, standards not met • 1- no progress Writing Rubrics Genre (type of writing), Word Choice(vocabulary, voice and style), Mechanics (spacing, punctuation ,capitals, spelling, grammar)

  19. Low Grade NoticesSeptember 28 Who receives low grade notices? • Students with 2’s or 1’s in academic subjects, work habits, homework, or behavior • Low grade notices are sent home prior to Report Cards going home

Conference Week • Wednesday Oct. 4- Oct.6 • A Conference preference form will go home 3 weeks prior • Conference week Minimum Days 12:30pm, except Tuesday 1:10 • Parents have the opportunity to opt out of coming to a conference if your child is receiving a 3 or better in all areas • phone conference option
