Dissolved Solids • Salt is not the only thing that is dissolved in water. • Water that contains a lot of dissolved minerals is called “Hard Water”. • Water that contains only a little dissolved minerals is called “Soft Water”.
Undissolved Solids • To obtain drinking water from a source like this, you would need to use distillation • Is there a less expensive way to get clean drinking water?
Undissolved Solids • Undissolved solids can be removed from solutions using a technique called “settling”. • When you let muddy water sit for a while, the cloudy colour disappears as the solids sink to the bottom.
Undissolved Solids • Over time, undissolved solids will settle to the bottom of a container. (Settling)
Dissolved Gases • Water contains dissolved gases like oxygen and carbon dioxide. • Several animals need to have dissolved gases in the water in order to survive, especially oxygen. • Cold water contains more dissolved oxygen than warm water.
Dissolved Gases • Human interaction causes bodies of water to contain less dissolved oxygen because the temperature rises. • When water is controlled by a barrier, like a dam, the water can becomes warmer than it normally would.
This causes dissolved gases to turn back into gases and are released back into the air.
Dissolved Gases • Water that factories use usually becomes heated but if it is cooled down before being released, the gases will remain dissolved.
Chromatography • Most candy and soft drinks are colored using dyes. The dyes are classified as a solution. • It is possible to separate the individual dyes using a technique called chromatography.
Chromatography • You can dissolve the dyes in water to create a watery solution. A drop of the new solution is placed on filter paper. • The paper is then placed in a container with a small amount of water. • The paper draws the water up itself and the dyes are absorbed as well.
Chromatography • Because different dyes have different attractions to the water, each dye will travel a different distance up the paper • Now you can identify the different dyes.
Chromatography • Chromatography can be used by doctors to help diagnose illnesses and also in forensic science to analyze ink samples.
