Basic Schedule • Eleven days, of which the first and last will be devoted to traveling. • Day 2 and 3: Relaxing at the beach and hiking. • One hour drumming session every night followed by a training session for lessons the next day.
Drums, recorder, and voice…Oh my. • We taught in rural primary schools, 3 year olds through 6th grade.
Music Education Expectations • Learn and memorize: several vocal pieces, including the national anthem, several drumming rhythms and variations, and simple recorder pieces. • We were also expected to study and understand the culture and history of Jamaica before arriving. • Placed in teams with a supervisor at each school.
Donations • Part of the JAFSP mission is to purchase and donate supplies to the schools we taught at.
Kumina Drummers • Kumina drummers came to our guest house and performed for us. • They bless the drums with rum before they play. • Instruments: Drums, sticks (katta tick), maracas, coconut graters and forks.
