  2. What is Facebook?

  3. It's a social networking site(but what can I do with it?) • Post your status • See your friend’s status • See interesting items posted by friends • Play games • Conduct business • Plan events • Join interest groups

  4. Who is Using Facebook? • 350 million current users • Over 100m in the U.S. • 2.5 billion pictures uploaded a month • 700k businesses have pages • 500k applications

  5. Who is Using Facebook? • The average user has 130 friends • The average user spends an hour a day on the site

  6. Why use Facebook in the Classroom? • Increase student engagement with class material • Create a learning community amongst your students • Improve student to professor communication • Meet a university goal of increasing student technological skills

  7. 1) Increase Student Engagement • The students are already there • Gives them a opportunity to think about material outside of class • They can observe peers level of interest in the class

  8. 2) Create a Learning Community • Facilitates connections among students • They can observe peer’s level of interest in the class • Gives them a network of people available to ask questions

  9. 3) Improves Communication • Students can contact you directly through site • Students can ask other students questions (instead of you) • Students can find information about the class directly

  10. 4) Technology Skills • Facebook says 85% market share of college students, but some of my classes as low as 60%

Some Precautions • Do not have to friend them • BTW, friend has a different meaning • Can use separate profile rather than personal one • Privacy settings are important • Show your active involvement in the site or it will not engage students • In other words, assignments are one thing, but post comments and links to show you are thinking about material too

  13. How I use it in my classroom • Replaces Blackboard Discussion Board • Brief writing assignments • Reactions to class materials like videos • Extra credit assignments • But there are many other ways • Polls, quizzes, announcements • Educational applications
