2 Birth and Early Years I was born three days before my brothers 4th birthday. The fourth child, third daughter, on that 3rd day in May in a little town called Granville. Farmers had big families back then. The farmhouse was cradled deep in the valley between tall green mountains. My earliest memories were the sweet sounds of the chick-a-dee and the morning dove calling to waking up the world.
2 School and College Grade School Going to school was easy. While most kids ride a bus or get dropped off by a parent, I walked across the street. It was a one room school. One room, one teacher, six grades and about 18 students. Many of the students were my siblings and cousins. Granville had a population of 120 people. Some people liked to make the joke “there are more cows than people here.” They were probably right.
3 High School at the end of 6th grade, I left my little school to go to a much bigger High School with 700 students. What a shook it was to be with so many people. Even though my parents were both employed by the school my mom the nurse and my dad a science teacher making the adjustment was very difficult. I had to move from classroom to classroom, teacher to teacher learning how to navigate through a busy hallway with lots of other students.
