2. Overview Health promotion values & economic development
Advocacy & partnerships with global movements for equitable, sustainable economic development
‘Radical’ Health Promotion as a catalyst for health promoting economic development
3. Health Promotion Values & Economic Development However health promotion gets involved with economic development it must be consistent with its value base:
Participation
Equity
Empowerment
4. Participation Stakeholder involvement
Identifying stakeholders
Enabling processes
Creating collaborative relationships
Engaging in critical dialogue
Reflection-in-action
5. Equity Equity not Equality
Pay attention to the most vulnerable
Equity in process not just outcomes
Equity is not neutrality!
6. An Homage to Paulo Freire “Washing one’s hand’s of the conflict between the powerful and the powerless means to side with the powerful, not to be neutral” (Freire, 1972)
7. Empowerment Not about ‘giving’ power to people
Create conditions where local communities have ‘control’
Negotiating power and recognizing differences
Human flourishing and sustainability
8. Health promoting economic development means… Full and meaningful participation in economic decision-making
An equity focus on economic development that has as its first priority benefits for the most vulnerable
Leaving communities with more power and control over their economic life in order to make benefits sustainable and encourage independence
9. Advocacy & Partnerships Health promotion must do a better job linking with global development institutions and global social movements
First it must establish links and partnerships through an analysis of both health implications and the health promotion value base
Many health promoters have begun to produce important work in this area (e.g. Ron Labonté)
Health promoters must use their influence to advocate for health promoting economic development
10. ‘Radical’ Health Promotion I first heard this idea from Paulo Buss
The key principle of acting on the social and economic determinants of health to promote health and reduce health inequities
A short example: the Manguinhos Project
