  1. Imagery

  2. Imagery (definition) • figurative or descriptive language in a literary work • the formation of mental images, figures, or likenesses of things

  3. The best imagery utilizes… • The 5 senses: (a.k.a. sensory imagery) • Sight • Smell • Taste • Touch • Hearing

  4. The trick is to SHOW, not TELL. • Example of a paragraph with little imagery. • It was cold outside. The weather was really bad. I couldn’t wait to get inside so I could warm up. • Example of a paragraph with AMAZING imagery. • I heard the wind howl like an arctic wolf as I hurried home as quickly as my legs could move. The frigid air blew quickly across my face. My nose was frozen, and my tongue tingled with the taste of snowflakes forming water that seemed as though it came straight from a glacier. Swirling white tornadoes surrounded me as I approached my doorstep, and my body craved nothing more than the glowing warmth from the fireplace that bellowed smoke above my rooftop, and the comfort of smoldering, hot bowl of my mom’s famous stew. Zzzzz…Boring!

  5. Imagery also uses… • Metaphors • “Peter was a bolt of lightning racing through the crowd…” • “The angry mother was a whirlwind of fury…” • “Spring was a constant breath of fresh air…” • Similes • “I heard the wind howl like an arctic wolf…” • “Life is like a box of chocolates…” • “She was as angry as a bull that had seen red…”

  6. Can you find any sensory imagery, similes, or metaphors in the passage? • I heard the wind howl like an arctic wolf as I hurried home as quickly as my legs could move. The frigid air blew quickly across my face. My nose was frozen, and my tongue tingled with the taste of snowflakes forming water that seemed as though it came straight from a glacier. Swirling white tornadoes surrounded me as I approached my doorstep, and my body craved nothing more than the glowing warmth from the fireplace that bellowed smoke above my rooftop, and the comfort of smoldering, hot bowl of my mom’s famous stew.

  7. Imagery makes writing more elaborate, more enjoyable, and more exciting! It brings the story to life!
