NEBB 2009 GENERAL COMMENTS ON THE EVOLUTION OVER TIME OF SUBSTRATES AND OF ANIMAL POPULATIONS.MOTU HAAPITI - JUNE 2009. • Substrates. Surveyed for some 2,5 years, this site shows, on the one hand, a certain stability in its living coral cover and, on the other hand, the recent appearance of macrophytic algae. The site is little frequented and so damage is slight even though it is situated in a « hoa » that generally attracts fishermen and hunters. • 2. Animals. Detritivores are scarce since sedimentary pockets themselves are almost totally absent. Herbivores have been more abundant over the last two surveys, which correlates with the appearance of macrophytic algae.
NEBB 2009 • Carnivores principally confirm the arrival of crown of thorns starfish from the barrier reef itself and not just through the only pass of the island. • The populations of omnivores have exploded over two surveys, in particular the number of diadem sea urchins. The reason for this change is still unknown and it will be necessary to make at least two more surveys. • This site is likely to see significant changes in the coming months given the new presence of crown of thorns starfish. The final result for living corals could resemble that observed in the south of the island in 2002.
