  1. Who is the Greatest?

  2. The Problem of Sinful Pride • Mat. 18:1-9

  3. The Problem of Sinful Pride • Mark 9:34 • But they kept silent, for on the road they had disputed among themselves who would be the greatest.

  4. The Problem of Sinful Pride • Mark 9:35 • And He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, "If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all."

  5. The Problem of Sinful Pride • Matthew 18:3-4 • and said, "Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 "Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

  6. The Problem of Sinful Pride • Matthew 19:7-11 • They said to Him, "Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?" 8 He said to them, "Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. 9 "And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery." 10 His disciples said to Him, "If such is the case of the man with his wife, it is better not to marry." 11 But He said to them, "All cannot accept this saying, but only those to whom it has been given:

  7. The Problem of Sinful Pride • Matthew 20:20-21 • Then the mother of Zebedee's sons came to Him with her sons, kneeling down and asking something from Him. 21 And He said to her, "What do you wish?" She said to Him, "Grant that these two sons of mine may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on the left, in Your kingdom."

  8. Humility is… • …not thinking you are above making the same mistake as someone else has. • Galatians 6:1 • Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.

  9. Humility is… • …not thinking you are above making the same mistake as someone else has. • 1 Corinthians 10:11-12 • Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. 12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.

  10. Humility is… • …not thinking you are above making the same mistake as someone else has. • 1 Corinthians 10:13 • No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

  11. Humility is… • …not thinking you are above making the same mistake as someone else has. • James 4:11-12 • Do not speak evil of one another, brethren. He who speaks evil of a brother and judges his brother, speaks evil of the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. 12 There is one Lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy. Who are you to judge another?

  12. Humility is… • …not thinking you are above making the same mistake as someone else has. • 1 Corinthians 13:1 • Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.

  13. Humility is… • …not thinking you are above making the same mistake as someone else has. • 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 • Love suffers long …is kind…does not parade itself, is not puffed up…does not seek its own…bears all things…

  14. Humility is… • …Taking God at His Word. • 2 Peter 3:16 • as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures.

  15. Humility is… • …Taking God at His Word. • 1 Corinthians 4:6 • Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes, that you may learn in us not to think beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up on behalf of one against the other.

  16. Humility means… • …Means You Repent of Sin and Will Not Tolerate Sin.

  17. Humility means… • …you’ll live each day as though it were your last. • James 4:13-14 • Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit"; 14 whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.

  18. Humility means… • …you will work together, for one another. • Philippians 2:3-4 • Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

  19. Why is Humility So Important Anyway? • Because we are commanded to have the mind of Christ in us. • Philippians 2:4-8 • Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. 5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.

  20. Why is Humility So Important Anyway? • Because Humility is a condition of salvation.. • James 4:6 • But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: "God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble." • James 4:10 • Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.

  21. Humility means… • …submitting to God. • James 4:6-7 • But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: "God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble." 7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

  22. Humility means… • …submitting to God. • James 4:8 • Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
