Catalytic Converters Siemens We Can Change The World Presented by Oceanside 6th Graders Greg Maisch, Mary Cecil, Ethan Grosman, and Annelisa Milano
There are millions of cars on the road in the United States. Each one is a source of air pollution. Especially in large cities like New York City. The amount of pollution that all the cars produce together can create big problems.http://auto.howstuffworks.com/catalytic-converter.htm
Important Facts You Need to Know… • Manhattan has the most commuters in the country. With about 1.6 million workers coming into the borough from somewhere else. • About 95,000 cars come in from Nassau County everyday. • Another 82,000 cars commute from Westchester. • Meanwhile, about 131,000 Manhattan residents leave the borough for work, with about 27,000 going to the Bronx, and about 24,000 going to Brooklyn, and about 20,000 heading to Queens. http://www.amny.com/urbanite-1.812039/manhattan-has-more-commuting-workers-than-anywhere-in-the-country-census-1.4756771
Carbon EmissionsWhat They Are… Carbon Emissions are Greenhouse gases Greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and chlorofluorocarbons These gases act like the glass covering a greenhouse, letting sunlight in but blocking some of the infrared radiation from the earth's surface that carries heat back into space.
Carbon EmissionsWhat They Do… Carbon emissions absorb the sun’s rays and warm the earth. This causes global warming.
A catalytic converter takes a lot of the carbon in car emissions out. It helps to filter out carbon exhaust – he;lping to reduce carbon emissions from the atmosphere. This makes for a healthier planet earth.
What catalytic converters look like and where they are in a car.
In the United States, by 1975 the EPA required all cars to have catalytic converters. By 2007, all vehicles needed to Have the, including buses and trucks.
In New York a new law took place on December 31 2013. The law for NY must match the California law.
What is C.A.R.B.? California Air Resources Board The California Air Resources Board is the “clean air agency” in the state government of California. Now New York must follow those regulations. One part of this law states that it is illegal for any place or anyone to sell or install used, recycled or reconditioned catalytic converters.
One of the Big Problems …DMV & DEC Department of Motor Vehicles Department of Environmental Conservation • The DEC makes the laws about Environmental issues. They follow the government’s rules. • The DMV deals directly with problems that have to do with vehicles. They should be educating all people about the standards they need to meet. THE PROBLEM: They need to communicate better to enforce the C.A.R.B. Regulations!
What Can YOU Do? • Have your car checked to make sure it has a catalytic converter that is up to date. Make sure everything is working just fine. • Find out if your car has been “grandfathered in” and is contributing to harmful environmental carbon emissions • Contact DMV, DEC, and EPA and petition for better enforcement of C.A.R.B laws!!!!! • Contact NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation at (518) 402 -8292 • Speak to the experts in your community like we did
Thank You to Mike and Judy Sadick from LI Catalytic Converters We appreciate the time you took out of your busy day to come to our classroom and teach us about catalytic converters, the environment, and the law!
Any Questions? Please email us at pollutinpeople@gmail.com to get more information!(yes we intentionally spelled it wrong to remind people concerned about our carbon emissions that things are not perfect!)
