  2. Facts about Multiplication What is multiplication? Multiplication is repeated addition. When is multiplication used? When there is a certain number of groups and an equal number in each group, multiplication can be used to find the total. http://www.studyzone.org/testprep/math4/d/multiplicationsentl.cfm

  3. Ex: Veronica is baking cookies. She has 3 rows with 5 cookies in each. How many cookies does she have in all? There are 3 rows of 5 5+5+5 = 15 3 x 5 = 15

  5. Multiplication has different meanings You can demonstrate multiplication by using an addition sentence or a multiplication sentence. In this example there are 4 groups of 7. • Addition Sentence 7+7+7+7 = 28 • Multiplication Sentence 7 x 4 = 28

  6. Practice Problems! 1) Write an addition sentence and a multiplication sentence for the picture below. Given: there are 3 groups of 9. 2) There are 2 rows with 6 students in each. How many total students are there?

  7. Answers 1) Addition Sentence: 9 + 9 + 9 = 27 Multiplication Sentence: 3 x 9 = 27 2) There are 12 total students
