  1. Lab Station # 1: Toothpick • Obtain a toothpick from the beaker and break it into several pieces. Discard the broken pieces in the waste beaker. • Record your observations of the broken toothpick.

  2. Lab Station # 2: HCl + Mg • Take a clean test tube. Put it in the test tube rack. • Using the tweezers, take ONE piece of Magnesium (Mg) chunk and put it in the test tube. Close the cap to the container. • Using a pipette, add just enough Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) to the test tube to cover the Mg chunk. (about one squeeze-full). • Observe the test tube closely for about a minute and record your observations. • Feel the bottom of the test tube with the palm of your hand and record your observations. • Dump the waste into the waste beaker. Rinse the test tube and place the clean test tube upside down in the test tube rack.

  3. Lab Station # 3: NaCl + AgNO3 WARNING: SILVER NITRATE STAINS SKIN AND CLOTHES. USE CAUTION! • Measure 10 mL of Sodium Chloride solution (NaCl) into a graduated cylinder using a pipet. • Pour it into a test tube. • Carefully add 2 drops of silver nitrate (AgNO3) to the tube. Record your observations. • Dump the contents into the Waste beaker. Thoroughly rinse the cylinder and the test tube. Put the tube upside down on the test tube rack.

  4. Lab Station # 4: Sodium Chloride-Water • Add about 100 mL of water to an empty beaker (take water from the sink). • Add 1 small scoop of sodium chloride to the beaker. • Using the plastic stirrer, mix the contents of the beaker until the sucrose dissolves. • Record your observations. • Dump contents in the sink and rinse the beaker out thoroughly.

  5. Lab Station # 5: Candle • Use a match to light a candle. Dispose of the used match in the waste beaker. • Observe the lit candle for about a minute. Then blow out the candle. • Record your observations. HINT: This is a tricky one!!!! Pay attention to everything that’s going on and make careful observations here.

  6. Lab Station # 6: Acetone and Styrofoam • SLOWLY pour acetone into the 100 mL beaker to about 1/3 of the way. • Take one Styrofoam peanut and put it in the 100 mL beaker. • Record your observations. • Pour the contents into the Waste beaker.
