  2. Intranet Basics • Intranet Management • Strategic Intranet • Intranet Components • Intranet Technical Decision • Intranet Policies • Intranet Budgets • Intranet Pilot Chapter Objects

  3. Objectives : • Define and Describe an Intranet • Understand The Facilities Provided by an Intranet. • Understand how an intranet supports your organization's mission • Pose questions in order to design an intranet for your organization • Understand the components of an intranet • Compare the intranet and an internet • Understand the need for policies governing your intranet

Objectives : • Develop guidelines and policies for intranet usage • Understand a pilot intranet deployment • Understand the reasons for a pilot project • Understand management issues related the adoption of an intranet throughout your organization • Engage management in a discussion of organizational issues related to the deployment of an intranet in your organization • Understand the cost factors involved in the development , deployment , and maintenance of an intranet

  5. What is intranet ? • A network based on TCP/IP protocols (an internet) belonging to an organization, usually a corporation, accessible only by the organization's members, employees, or others with authorization. An intranet's Web sites look and act just like any other Web sites, but the firewall surrounding an intranet fends off unauthorized access. Like the Internet itself, intranets are used to share information. Secure intranets are now the fastest-growing segment of the Internet because they are much less expensive to build and manage than private networks based on proprietaryprotocols.

  6. - Intranets Components &Describe an Intranet

  7. Describe an Intranet • a network employing standard intranet protocols such as TCP/IP • Transmission control protocol/ Internet Protocol AndHTTPHypertext Transfer Protocol • To connect a set of clients within an organization or a group of associated clients supporting a community interest. • The intranet at a corporation was the first commercial intranet to be based on the world wide web and to use the HTTP protocol

  8. An organizational intranet provides facilities to : • Share information within the organization • Transfer information between departments or other entities within the organization • Make information accessible across geographic and organizational boundaries • Collaborate with other people in the organization • Automate internal operational processes • Provide a single user interface to organizational information resources and tools • Train and educate individuals within the organization

  9. With these facilities , an intranet offers the opportunity for an organization to : • Provide ready access to information needed to make information decisions • Increase awareness of other projects happening within the organization • Support geographically dispersed individuals and departments • Stay abreast of the latest advances in fields related to the organizations mission

  12. The intranet can there by support intra-organizational efforts in the following areas : • Internal communications • Collaborative and cooperative projects • Intellectual capital management • Business process reengineering

  13. INTRANET MANAGEMENT

  14. Lets consider some interesting statistics about corporate adoption and acceptance of intranets from major market research firms , including IDC , forester research , and zone research . • More than half of the larger corporations now have an intranet in place • The majority of corporations are considering implementing an intranet . • By 1998 , corporations were spending close to $11 billion intranets

  15. Some of Advantages of intranet : • support decentralized decision making and control. • organize work . • an intranet can serve to break down some of the barriers between management levels • increasing communication and making people at each level more responsible for the success of the organization . • adoption of a corporate intranet facilitates A corporations move toward lines of business from a centrally controlled vertically integrated business model . • helped the top management to a success deception.

  16. STRATEGIC INTRANETS

  17. Intranets can support an organization's mission by : • facilitating communication , enhancing cooperation , and promoting collaboration. • support an organization's Providing competitive ; analysis to marketing ; dissection making in quickly way ; fulfill its missions . • Supporting the sharing of information .

  18. INTRANET COMPONENTS

  19. Web Browser Web Server Web Server Web Server Application Server Application Server CGI JDBC Driver Application Server API Application Server API Component Transaction Server Component Transaction Server Component Transaction Server Component Transaction Server Database Driver Database Driver

  20. - INTRANET TECHNICAL DECISIONS • Pose the technical questions that need to be answered to formulate your intranet strategy • Make technical decisions within your organization regarding your intranet strategy and security requirements

  21. Let's look first at existing application and information systems • What components of an intranet are currently in place in the organization ? • Do all members have web browsers on their desktop systems • Is connectivity in place for all members of the organization to access all webs sites on the intranet ? • Does your organization have existing internal web sites ? can existing web servers accommodate additional web sites ? can existing web sites accommodate additional connect ? • What hardware is available for use within the intranet ? • What software available for use within the intranet? • Witch existing applications and legacy systems are worth maintaining ? • Witch of these can be easily connect to the intranet?

  22. deterrence • protections • detections • response

  23. INTRANET POLICIES

  24. AUP is the acronym for acceptable use policy . this policy describes what is allowed and not allowed by your organization regarding the use and dissemination of information and documents its important to develop such policy regarding the use and dissemination of information and documents for your organization's • At A corporation there were licensed marketing databases witch could not be shared with people out side the company , it was important to include a notice in the AUP • For the intranet that this information was for internal use only since BJ is a start up venture , the AUP for the intranet provides guidelines for protecting software and project planes that are under development and not ready for release yet .

  25. check on confidentiality polices and make sure that they apply to documents that’s are available on your organization's intranet . develop or updates confidentiality policies with members of your world wide web council , so that each group understands ramifications of making documents available on your organization's intranet • A corporation and BJ both develop polices for confidentiality and for internal use in the documents that ware posted to the intranet corporations modeled its intranet polices after its hard copy documents polices while BJ develop its document policy along with its intranet and internet polices when the company was started

  26. INTRANET BUDGETS

  27. Technology – hardware and software • Management • Network security • Training • Learning curve • Maintenance and update • DBMS and legacy systems integration • Human resources – headcount and expertise

  28. INTRANET PILOT

  29. Involving users and information providers from the beginning of the planning process is the best way to ensure that your system meets then needs of both the users and information providers For A corporation it was critical to engage members of various departments in the development of an intranet pilot the BJ community is much more comfortable using intranet applications and the main pilot project is the development of the online learning software for internal and external deployment , once again the needs of the user community are the most important factor to consider in developing , a pilot intranet project

  30. pilot implementation allow organization to • build user and management acceptance • incorporate feedback into their plans and development • understand costs and resources required to maintain and manage and intranet • establish and support a group of trained users and information providers over time

  31. The End

  32. Work shop • Will make 2 groups • First group take about the risk wich can risked intranet. • How we can protect intranet .
