Changes to Post 9/11 GI Bill If you are receiving Chapter 33 benefits, please review this presentation in its entirety, as your benefits will be changing effective August 2011
BAH Entitlement • Currently, if you are enrolled over half time (>50%) you receive BAH at your applicable percentage • Change: BAH entitlement will be prorated based on training status- ex. If you are enrolled ¾ time, you will receive ¾ rate BAH (your applicable percentage still applies)- will be rounded to the nearest 10th.
Tuition and Fees • If you are approved at 100% and are an instate resident, VA will cover 100% of tuition and fees- this includes all programs, undergrad and grad (even MBA) • If you receive a percentage, VA will still pay that percentage of your tuition and fees • Ex- you are approved at 80%, VA still pays 80% of your tuition/fees • Yellow Ribbon program still exists for out of state students approved at 100% • In addition, if you receive certain other forms of aid (scholarships, grants etc.) these amounts must be subtracted from the total cost of tuition before we report to VA- you can no longer “double dip”
Out of State Students • The new law has changed how VA will pay for out of state students • In state cap of $606.63/credit hour has been eliminated • VA will now only pay the in state rates for out of state students • For example: • In state student enrolled full time is charged $3264.65 • Out of state student enrolled full time is charged $9532.15 • VA will now pay the $3264.65 for the out of state student and the difference of $6267.50 is the students responsibility
Active Duty • Active duty are now eligible for the book stipend • This change is effective 1 October 2011
DE Students • Students enrolled in DE programs will now be eligible for BAH at ½ the national rate- approx. $673.50/month • Applicable percentage still applies- if you are approved at 80%, you will receive 80% of this rate • This change is effective 1 October 2011
Break Pay • Currently, students receive their monthly stipend over a break that is not more than 56 days. Example, students get paid over Christmas break • Change- there will be no more break pay for any student for any reason. You will only be paid for days you are in school. Example: • Fall semester School starts 17 August- first payment on 1 Sep for 17 Aug- 31 Aug School ends 15 December- last payment on 1 January for 1 Dec- 15 Dec • Spring semester School starts 10 January- first payment 1 February for 10 Jan-31 Jan School ends on 15 May- last payment 1 June for 1 May-15 May *** These months are partial BAH months- no payment will come over the summer unless you take summer classes, and will only come for the days enrolled
