בס"ד Engineering education – where to? Special projects: Ultra-orthodox and Ethiopian students Noah Dana-Picard ראש חודש כסלו תשע"ג
Over 4000 students 3,400 Bachelor and Masters students 700 in Preparatory programs and supplementary years
Academic Departments - Engineering • Electronic Engineering • Physics – Electro-optics Engineering • Physics – Medical Engineering • Industrial Engineering and Management • Software Engineering • Communications Systems Engineering • Computer Science • Bioinformatics Engineering and Exact Sciences BSc Engineering of Telecommunication Systems
Current trends and Perspectives • Israel needs “high quality” engineers • Currently: outsourcing to India and Far East • At JCT (Machon Lev), at least in electro-optics and electronics: we encourage weak students to move to other departments • RF has once again become an interesting area => new courses and labs • Life sciences are taking off => engineering disciplines are looking to find ways to apply their techniques to life sciences
JCT is addressing Major Issues In Israel Today Providing academic opportunities to meet Israel’s economic and social needs
Advancing Ethiopian Israelis • First engineering college to take up the challenge • 135 Ethiopian students currently studying at JCT: 95 men and 40 women • 95 graduates with bachelor degrees, most of them professional officers in IDF • 99% employment rate in professional occupations
Academic Education for the Haredi Population 500 haredi men among 2000 students on the men campus 1000 haredi women among 2000 students on the women campuses • Religious institution • Academic research institution • Range of student services • Established institution’s reputation for job placement
Graduates of JCT’s Mechina Program for Haredim Distribution of Haredi students by Academic Department
HarediEmployment - requirements • Not to be afraid to employ haredim engineers • Need for some adaptations • Women: schedule, working environment, etc. • Men: time for prayer, working environment (at a less extent than for women, …) • Benefits for the company: • Hours at work are hours at work • Lower rate of jumping from place to place • Etc.
