  1. Essential toolkit for sustaining innovation based on new product design techniques Dr. Salvador GonzalezGarcia sgg@itesm.mx ITESM Campus Morelia (México)

  2. Introduction • Sometimesithappensthatteamsstart a projectveryconfident of theirknowledge, minimizingtheimportance of themethod(decreasingtheprobability of success). • Organizationsusually introduce the culture of innovationformingsmallgroupsorcommittees (not to the whole organization).

  3. Innovation proposal (1/2) • Based on some relaxations to the formalism of some industrial engineering methods, such as QFD, the morph matrix, FMEA,…we obtain 4 essential matrices, as follows: How is it going to be solved? Matrix 2: Options OPTIONS Matrix 1: What vs How How is it going to be solved? Concept 1 What is desired? Concept 2 Concept 3 What is obtained? Different alternatives for the MVP (yellow, orange, green) What is obtained? The (most important) Technical aspects

  4. Methods (2/2) • Once that different proposals are obtained for the MVP, the winning concept is selected. It must avoid the potential failures during design… Alternatives for the MVP Matrix 4: Avoid the Potential Failure for the MVP Matrix 3: Decision Actions, responsibles and dates R I S K N U M. The “winning concept” for the MVP

  5. Concluding remarks • These tools can be taught* to any person, with daily life examples in a very short period of time. • We had some successful workshops using the innovation matrices with elementary school teachers, children and parents. • These techniques were also applied in some innovation projects reducing the amount of design time. sgg@itesm.mx * Forits use in sequenceor stand-alone.
