  3. Work Related Learning – typically; A block placement of one week carried out in Years 10/11. Bespoke Placements – can be carried out in any year group (including Years 12/13) as a requirement for their studies. Extended Work Experience – one day per week over the academic year for any period of time – in a sector of interest to the student Employer talks, visits, studies CPD Which services are we talking about?

  4. Information, Advice & Guidance – typically; Careers Guidance – 1-1 Careers Guidance – Groupwork Careers Education support Careers Information support Events, road shows, workshops, occupational talks etc Which services are we talking about?

  5. Employers feedback – Many young people not prepared for the world of work. Good qualifications but no or minimal work skills. Young people underselling themselves at interview or producing poor CV’s. Local employers need a skilled workforce to support growth. Why do you need these services?

  6. Raising the participation age increases the challenge of keeping all students engaged, but are they all receiving the right Careers Guidance to ensure they have a focus, a pathway to follow? Increased opportunities to involve students in WRL? Is Year 10 Work Experience the appropriate time for a block work week’s work or should it move to a later year group nearer a time when a young person can leave education or training ? New Statutory duties require a broader range of CEIAG and WRL activity to take place throughout all of the key stages… Why do you need these services? Cont.

  7. A good experience of work can inspire students to raise their level of academic achievement. Better preparation and understanding of the workplace can reduce the number of students who become NEETS and improve school destinations. “Real” experiences to enhance future CV’s and Personal Statements. Provides an understanding of the working environment and the qualifications, skills and qualities sought by employers. Effective 1 – 1 Careers Guidance provides both the routes and the required qualifications to the preferred learning and work pathways, reducing drop out post 16 and improves grades. September 2012 – Statutory duty for schools to secure access to independent and impartial careers guidance for their pupils in school years 9 to 11 September 2013 – Duty extended to years 8-13 along with revised statutory guidance The guidance to be reviewed in March 2014 Statutory Duties & Ofsted inspections

  9. Grade descriptors – Achievement of pupils at the school Outstanding (1) Pupils develop and apply a wide range of skills to great effect in reading, writing, communication and mathematics. They are exceptionally well prepared for the next stage in their education, training or employment. Grade descriptors – overall effectiveness: the quality of education provided in the school Outstanding (1) Pupils, and particular groups of pupils, have excellent educational experiences at school and these ensure that they are very well equipped for the next stage of their education, training or employment. In turn, we want to develop these services and become a ‘one stop shop’ for World of Work services, we want to; Enable you to meet your statutory duties Improve the quality of your students placements and experiences Hear your views on what you want in your school / college / provider Hear the views of your learners Hear the views of your local community Each District area has local IAG & WRL representatives to deal with the schools / employers in your designated area. Where do you secure these services from?

  11. HCS co-ordinated 12,000 placements within Hertfordshire per academic year. Bank of over 30,000 employers – in Hertfordshire, Surrey, Essex and London who have been involved in work experience over the past ten years. Ceased trading at the end of August without notice leaving schools with no service provider. The Chamber of Commerce already delivered Work Experience on a smaller scale and are now working with Youth Connexions to deliver the service. HCS Careers Ltd & The Chamber of Commerce

  12. A new alliance… Already, we have approximately sixty schools that have either signed contracts or expressed an interest in working with The Chamber of Commerce and Youth Connexions. Recruited staff from HCS to work alongside The Chamber of Commerce to build and deliver the service. In 2014, all services to be joined together… Who can do these services for you?

Work Experience including “Bespoke “ placements linked to a particular sector of business or qualification – BTEC for example CV of Interview Workshops Business Speakers or Mentors Employers visits or visits to employer sites Work related projects Enterprise Activities – Industry Led or Young Enterprise The benefits for you and your students?

Provides experience of the workplace and an insight into careers/sectors Increases confidence and employability skills An opportunity to use and apply skills and knowledge in a working environment. An experience to build CV’s and Personal Statements Sets the curriculum into context Focused learners = improved attendance = more motivated students = better grades… The benefits for you and your students?
