The 100 Million Reasons Why International Adoption Should Be SupportedVanya WetheringtonHosted 2007
The 100 Million Reasons Why International Adoption Should Be Supported • According to UNICEF there are over 100 million orphans worldwide. • In comparison, the United States’ population is just over 300 million. • Most statistics gathered from adoption agencies are astounding. There are 8 million children institutionalized. • Every day 5,760 more children become orphans, and only 250,000 are adopted annually. • Every 2.2 seconds another orphan ages out of the system and has no family and no place to call home. • The question is why are more children not adopted?
The 100 Million Reasons Why International Adoption Should Be Supported • The children do not understand why no one wants them. • I know this because I was in an orphanage in Zelengoski, Russia, in 2007 when my parents hosted me for the summer. • I had lived in the orphanage for five years after both of my biological parents passed. • I waited along with over hundred other children hoping that one day a family would come for me and they did. • I was underweight for my age, spoke no English and was probably behind in school, but this year I graduate from high school with excellent grades, a loving family. • I have recently been accepted into the University of Mississippi’s Computer Science program. There are children like me who need a home to thrive and who will not be a statistic. • There are a 100 million children waiting like I was and they are the 100 million reasons why international adoption should be endorsed.
