Swadhar, Pune About Akshardeep & Ankur
AksharDeep Since 1999, Swadhar has been running alternative school classes in slum areas in greater Pune for children in the age group of 6 -12 years.
AksharDeep These children were not attending school for various reasons like poverty, child labour (several of these children work!), looking after siblings (typically, the elder girl children take care of younger siblings when their parents work), illiterate parents, long distance from the government school and migration (construction workers move where the jobs are). Akshardeep coaches these “out-of-school” children and prepares them for the primary school exam conducted by the Municipal Corporation and then integrates them into the regular Corporation schools. At Akshardeep, the focus is on the overall development of these children.
AksharDeep Our teachers are selected from the community itself and are provided continuous training by Swadhar. The teachers are also benefited and are developing into balanced individuals.
AksharDeep Asha for Education, Zurich has been funding ten AksharDeep NFE classes in the Pimpri-Chinchwad area since 2003; this funding covers around 250 children Article from Akshardeep for Asha-Zurich souvenir
AksharDeep Akshardeep’s schools and community engagement have resulted in a favorable attitude towards education in the slum areas. Local community participation in these educational efforts has improved too.
Ankur The Ankur school integrates children – some of whom are handicapped with “normal” children, children from the slum areas (vastis) with those from more privileged backgrounds.
Ankur In Ankur, children also receive apprenticeship training for vocations like carpentry, gardening, cooking and tailoring. Asha-SV is sponsoring 35 children from Akshardeep classes in the Pune vastis to go to Ankur. These children are making good progress at Ankur.
Ankur The Ankur “experiment” promotes a unified educational system where children from privileged, under-privileged backgrounds and those with special needs learn to adjust with each other and benefit from each other.
Ankur AksharDeep students attending Ankur have shown behavioral improvements in addition to academic progress.
