Reflexive Verbs • explain an action done to oneself • the subject of a reflexive verb performs and receives the action (the action is reflected back to the subject) example: Iam brushing my hair. She is taking a bath. (is bathing herself).
A reflexive verb is formed by using the reflexive pronoun and the corresponding form of the verb The reflexive pronouns come directly before the conjugated verb
EXAMPLES bañarse-to bathe oneself/to take a bath
Other important info… • It is assumed that body parts belong to the subject of the sentence I am brushing my teeth. • Parts of the body and articles of clothing use definite articles, not possessive adj. (mi/mis, tu/tus, su/sus, etc.) Me cepillo los dientes.
Other important info… • To make the sentence negative, add “no” before the reflexive pronoun Manuel nose afeita. Manuel is not shaving (himself).
Other important info… • When an infinitive is used, the reflexive pronoun is attached to the infinitive or placed before the conjugated verb. Las muchachas van a maquillarse. The girls are going to put on make-up (going to put make-up on themselves). Me tengo que bañar. I have to take a bath (bathe myself).
