  2. What’s the difference? Ana se mira. Ana is looking at herself. Reflexive Ana mira el reloj. Ana is looking at the clock. NOT Reflexive

  3. Reflexive Verbs • explain an action done to oneself • the subject of a reflexive verb performs and receives the action (the action is reflected back to the subject) example: Iam brushing my hair. She is taking a bath. (is bathing herself).

  4. Reflexive Pronouns

  5. A reflexive verb is formed by using the reflexive pronoun and the corresponding form of the verb The reflexive pronouns come directly before the conjugated verb

  6. EXAMPLES bañarse-to bathe oneself/to take a bath

  7. Other important info… • It is assumed that body parts belong to the subject of the sentence I am brushing my teeth. • Parts of the body and articles of clothing use definite articles, not possessive adj. (mi/mis, tu/tus, su/sus, etc.) Me cepillo los dientes.

  8. Other important info… • To make the sentence negative, add “no” before the reflexive pronoun Manuel nose afeita. Manuel is not shaving (himself).

  9. Other important info… • When an infinitive is used, the reflexive pronoun is attached to the infinitive or placed before the conjugated verb. Las muchachas van a maquillarse. The girls are going to put on make-up (going to put make-up on themselves). Me tengo que bañar. I have to take a bath (bathe myself).

  13. Let’s Practice- attaching • You need to comb your hair. • Necesitas peinarte el pelo. Te necesitas peinar el pelo. • We want to dry ourselves. • Queremos secarnos. Nos queremos secar. • She has to go to bed. • Ella tiene que acostarse. Se tiene que acostar. • They should brush their teeth. • Deben cepillarse los dientes. Se deben cepillar los dientes.
