18.1 Oxidation-Reduction All of these are types of oxidation/reduction reactions. • Forest fire • Rusting steel • Gasoline in car • Metabolism of food • Batteries The word “oxidation” was first used to describe an element combining with oxygen.
Redox Reactions – oxidation reduction reactions. • One or more electrons are transferred. • Oxidation-reduction reactions always involve a transfer of electrons from one species to another. • The species losing electrons is oxidized, while the species gaining electrons is reduced. • The species that causes the oxidation is the oxidizing agent. The species that causes the reduction is the reducing agent. (Bleach is a bleaching agent, it does not get bleached.)
Oxidation / Reduction OIL RIG – Oxid. Is Loss, Reduc. Is Gain LEO the Lion goes GER – Lose Electrons Oxidation Gain Electrons Reduction
Metal/Nonmetal Reactions o o +1 -1 2Na(s) + Cl2(g) 2NaCl(s) Na e- Cl Na+Cl- Na is oxidized and Cl is reduced. Cl is the oxidizing agent and Na is the reducing agent. Metals are oxidized when they react with nonmetals (reduced).
Oxidation/Reduction • Do metals gain or lose electrons? • Are they oxidized or reduced? • Do some metals lose electrons more easily than others? • If you put Cu(s) in Mg(NO3)2, will Cu lose e- and Mg gain them to become Mg? • Which metal wants to get rid of e- more?
4Fe + 3O2 2Fe2O3 • What is oxidized? What is reduced? • Fe is oxidized, O is reduced. • Reducing agent? Oxidizing agent? • Fe is the reducing agent • O is the oxidizing agent
Zn + Cl2 Zn2+ + 2Cl- • Oxidized? Reduced? • Zn2+,Cl- • Oxidizing agent? Reducing agent? • Cl2 – oxidizing agent • Zn – reducing agent
