What do you think the objective should be? The web site shows “Learn how to make teamwork or collaborative learning work effectively online. Forget the tests! Forget the quizzes! Let students have fun learning together as they are delegated to various projects and bring back information while learning at the same time. With careful planning, you can use Blackboard, Moodle or even the Web to make learning fun for your students and attain the Zen of teaching for yourself.”
Congrats! You Just Did a Collaborative Exercise! • Did you find it easy? • Did you find it fun? • Did you see how it engaged people?
Why Collaborative Learning? • Powerful learning engaging tool • Allows learners to learn from each other • Learn from multiple views • Collaborative learning can be measured • Rubrics • Evaluation forms • Essays
I rather use quizzes and tests • Test and quizzes are waste of time • People are nervous so you may or may not get the real facts if they learn (false positive) • Once test is taken, how many students will come back to learn what they missed? • 1 out of 20 maybe?
Advantages and DIsadvantages • Ted Pantiz of University of Mass listed about 44 different advantages – the most popular are • Develop higher level of thinking (retention and recall) • Critical Thinking Skills • Develop team working skills • Develop stronger communication skills • Develop community learning environment
Ok…then its for on campus only? • Absolutely not! • Can be used for online learning too!!! • There are so many tools you can use! • Blackboard 9 and Moodle Tools • Blackboard 9 has powerful Group Management Tool • Other tools can work with specific groups!
What tools in Blackboard can I use? • Remember collaborative learning is when multiple people working together • Discussion • Chat • Peer Assessment System
Google Docs • Google Docs can be shared and edited between invitees
Wiggio • Allows for own group place online for meetings, calendar, files, polls and messages
DimDim • A free online meeting and screen and document sharing for meetings and discussions
Ning • Ning is a fun and free social group but can be locked down to invites.
