Project background • DVRC recently updated young women’s resource, Relationships: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly • Need for similar resource for young men • Lack of specific information or programs targeting young men in violence prevention
Aims of the resource • Violenceprevention and information resource • 3 key causes of violence against women: • Gender stereotypes • Unequal power • Community attitudes • Explicitly addresses gender and stereotypes
Student participation • Young men between the ages of 14 and 23 were engaged in this project through: • School focus groups (content and design) • Online survey • Informal design concept feedback
Project Reference Group • Provided advice on the design and content of the booklet • Members included: • VicHealth • Victorian Women’s Trust • ARCSHS • Northern CASA • La Trobe University
Content • Relationships • Sex, consent and pressure • Respect and how to get it • Masculinity • Communication • ‘Sexting’ • Helping a friend • Website and phone numbers for additional information and support
Distribution and launch • Mid year distribution to: • Government and non-government schools • Organisations currently working in schools-based violence prevention • Relevant government departments (Australia-wide) • Available online • Teacher resource also developed • Launched at the PiP forum in September 2011
Informing the sector • Project has gathered some useful information which may be of interest to those working in the prevention sector • Some elements of this project are currently being publicised through the DVRC blog • Ongoing work (subject to funding) will focus on using this project to build the evidence base for engaging young men in violence prevention
