Unit Outline and Expectations • Print and REFER to unit outline REGULARLY for: • Contact information • Carolyn Crook • Email: crook.carolyn@nd.edu.au • mobile: 0418 839 077 • Set goals and study with the unit outcomes • University regulations and expectations • Weekly prep and revision using program outline • Preparation and completion of assessments • Finding resources that will help consolidate and extend information literacy and research skills
Email and Blackboard • CHECK EMAIL REGULARY = HEART OF STUDY • Class updates, tasks on blackboard, changes • BLACKBOARD = STUDY LIFELINE • Lectures, readings, task sheets, homework/revision tasks • BLOG = LEARNING COMMUNITY • Shared work, ideas and study tasks
Agreements • YOU – email is the easiest. Text /call in emergencies or if too complicated to email. • Inform me of problems, absences, sickness, questions. • Always inform me ASAP! • ASK FOR HELP! • ME • Will reply within 24 hours during weekdays (unless problem arises). • Over the weekend will reply within 48 hours (unless problem arises). • Will make time to see you.

What is Information Literacy? • Knowing when you need information: TEP004 and TEP002/003 • How to find it: TEP004 • Evaluate it: TEP004 • Use it effectively: TEP006 • Deliver it in a communication: TEP006 and TEP002/TEP003
Scavenger Hunt • Work in pairs • Use Google to find a definition of information literacy • Record the keywords you used and how many results came up with each search • Decide on the best definition • Pairs will report which keywords came up with the best results and the best definition they found

The Research Cycle What links can you see between information literacy and the research cycle?
Analyse The Question Describe the effects that alcohol advertising has on adolescents. • Operative words –tells you what to do • Keywords – the main ideas and concepts • Limiters - limits the idea/concept to a particular group, time, place or age.
Brainstorm The Topic Describe the effects that alcohol advertising has on adolescents. • Always start with “what you know”. • Class brainstorm on topic. • How does this help you?
Establish Keywords Describe the effects that alcohol advertising has on adolescents. • Keywords are the main ideas and concepts of the question • Add keywords from brainstorm
1st Three Steps of Research Cycle • Why are these 3 steps important? • How does this help you? Your Turn: “Youth violence has increased as a result of violent movies and the internet in the 21st Century.” Choose and argument for or against this statement. Work in pairs to carry out the first 3 steps of the research cycle.
