  1. CNIC Tiled Display Wall and Astronomical Data Visualization Kejun Dong, Yihua Zheng @ CNIC Elaine Liu, Jurgen Schulze @ UCSD PRAGMA11 Workshop Oct.16/17 Osaka, Japan

  2. Outline • CNIC Tiled Display Wall • Astronomical Data Visualization

  3. Tiled Display Wall @ CNIC • A Tiled Display Wall (TDW) is a large-scale high-resolution display • CNIC’s TDW is setup at 2005, supporting by Chinese Academy of Science. • Uses a five by four grid of LCDs and 21-nodes cluster running Rocks (with CentOS installed). • 1Gigabit network for each node.

  4. LCD grid • ViewSonic 17’ LCDs

  5. 1+20 Cluster • IBM xSeries 226 Server • Xeon2.8GHz • 1G Memory (frontend 3G) • Dual Gigabit Network • 73G SCSI Harddisk • Nvidia 128M Video adapter

  6. Visualization Software Package • Rocks Viz Roll – SDSC • SAGE - EVL/UIC

  7. Rocks Viz Roll • DMX - Distributed Multihead X http://dmx.sourceforge.net/ • Key Soft: • Xdmx:a proxy X server that provides a multi-head support for multiple displays attached to different machines. • Chromium:a system for interactive rendering on clusters of graphics workstations • Cg:nVidia Toolkit

  8. Applications Based on Rocks Viz • OpenGL App • QMView • PyMol • VMD • ParaView • Image Viewer (not very well) • xnview, gthumb, ImageMagic

  9. PyMol

  10. xnview

  11. SAGE • Scalable Adaptive Graphics Environment • SAGE is a graphics streaming architecture for supporting collaborative scientific visualization environments with potentially hundreds of megapixels of contiguous display resolution. • Key Soft • QUANTA, Readline, SDL, GLUT • SAGE/Sage UI

  12. Applications Based on SAGE • Image Viewer • JuxtaView, imageviewer(10kx10k), Magic Carpet • OpenGL • Qmview • Video Viewer • MPlayer • Collaboration • VNCViewer • Others • Rasmol, lambdaCam

  13. JuxtaView

  14. OpenGL App

  15. Others MPlayer VNC

  16. Astronomical Data Visualization • A PRIME 2006 Project • 2006.6-8 • Supported by NSF • Using CalIT2 TDW and CNIC’s TDW • Finished by Elaine Liu (UCSD) at CNIC • To remotely visualize high resolution astronomical images on UC San Diego’s tile display wall while controlling at CNIC and to gain more knowledge about astronomy.

  17. Software & Data • Software • SAGE • JuxtaView Server • JuxtaSCUI/SAGE UI • Astronomical Data • SDSS • DSS • Data from NASA

  18. Data Processing • FITS Images • JPG Images • TIFF Images (continuous Images) ImageMagic/Photoshop

  19. Image made from stitching up 16 smaller images together

  20. CNIC’s TDW using SAGEUI Showing at CalIT2 TDW Monitoring CalIT2 TDW with LambdaCam

  21. Next in Astro Visualization… • Fits data remote display • Arranging images automatically and Stitching them up
